Preparationa for 8pring Work. -The present is the farmer's time to ar range hia plans for the coming year, and on this being carefully done depends greatly the success of future operations. He has the gathered experience of the past to aid him; and if one or more crops have failed, now is the time to consider the cause. lias he been unprofitably f tinted in the necessa ry amount of labor? has any other than the best seed been sown or planted? have weeds been allowed to grow unchecked? has work been performed too much in a hurry? have the most approved implement of all kinds ouly been osed? Trade and business in the cities have been depresjed the past season, as well as the prices of produce in the country. Let not the farmer be dL'couraged. Is the working stock of the farm sufficient ? baa there been false .economy in the use of manures? has there been room to store the crops? All these questions should be asked and answered ; recollecting that the most im provident of all kinds of farming is the rais ing of half crops, and that poor stock is al ways the most expensive; he sheuld map oat his plans for the year 1870, so as to a void all these errors ; and with the aid of agricultural papers, to introduce an improv ed system of management- The increase of rail-road tacilties may bring his farm within market distance of largo cities or manufac- tones, so that his whole system should be changed and perishable articles, such as butter, milk, small fruits, vegetables, be cultivated instead of beef and grain, with which he has been striving in an unequal competition with the choap lands of the .West. Let the farmer now consider and digest the tried capacities of his soil and its adap tation to particular crop. lias he general ly succeeded with corn or potatoes, or car rots, or cabbage, or broom corn, or hops, or pasturage ? let him not suddenly change bis system on account of temparry depres sion in prices. "Time and chance happeneth onto all," and with patient industry and perseverance, every man in his proper calling, (not for getting the performance of moral, social and religious duties) will find that for him "seed time and harvest, cold and heat, sum mer and winter, day and night, shall not cease, nor the early and latter rain. ''Let us then be up and doing, With a heart for any fate Still achieving, still pursuing. Learn to labor and to wait." Get Leather Bits. Oneof the most cruel things done todamb beasts is putting frozen iron bits into a horse's mouth.- It is not only painful but a dangerous act For every time living flesh touches a metal much below the freez ing point, the latter extracts the beat from the former and freezes it Thus a horse's mouth becomes frozen by the cold iron se veral times a day put unto it ; each time causing these freezings to go deeper and deeper, to end at last in extensive ulcera tion. With such a sore mouth the poor horse refuses to eat and" pines away which calls the horse doctor in.- They call it bots, glander.", horse ail, Sec, and go to cramming down poisonous drugs in big doses ; and tho next you know of the poor abused creature, he is trundled off to Le food for fish or the crows. Many a valuable horse has been "mysteriously" lost in just that way. Thinking and human people avoid this by first warming the bits : but this is much trouble, and sometimes impossible, as in night work like staging and physician's work. Now all this trouble and loss are en tirely avoided, as we have found on trial, by getting the harness makers to get lea thcr bits for winter nse, so made that no metal substance can touch the flesh. They are durable and cost only half a dollar. We wouldn't exchange ours tor a gold one, if it couldn't be replaced. Do not fail to try it Lazy Farmers. Laziness prevents a man from getting off his horse to put up the first rail that gets thrown off the fence, and through this lazy neglect a whole crop of corn is damaged. Laziness prevents a man from driving one nail when it would have answered, and by and by a carpenter must be hired to make extensive repairs. Laziness permits a gate to get off the hinges and lie in the mud, or be proped up or a barn to go to rack and thus to dam age a vast amount of the product in store. Laziness, in short, Is the right and pro per name for nine-tenth of the excuses giv en for bad farming. But by far the most pro. lific of the many- wastes that are due to la ziness is the waste in itself so great and has so many ramifications, that we must defer its discussion until a more appropri ate tiiuo. A way is given to prevent horses pulling at the halter. Put a small rope under the horses tail, bring the ends forwar J, crossing them on the back, and tying them on the breast Put the strap through the ring and tie the rope in front of the breast When .the horse pulls, be will, of course, find him self in a rather uncomfartable position, and discontinues the effort to free himself.
