Bedrooms,
As one third of oar existence w spent in
our bed chambers, in the uncou.-cion- hap
piness of our bleep, and as good health i im
- possible without the habitual .breathing of
inhalin pare air is self evident. No sleep
can be sound and healthful nnle.is the per
eon is comfortably warm ; and many a man
who has gone to bed in health has awakened
with a mortal malady, or one involving life
long suffering, by having been exposed to a
draught of air upon some part ot the body
while asleep, either a broken pane, or an
unstopped crevice.
Three things, then, are ind'spensible to
the healrhfulness of a bed chamber : we must
be comfortably warm, mu.it not be exposed
to draughts of air, must be supplied with a
pure air, not very cold. A great deal has
been said about sleeping with windows sty
high so as to let in all out of doors ; none
but monomaniacs or born fooU write thus ;
we know that many persons have met their
deaths by means of an open window expos
ing them to a sudden change in the weather
during the night; and certainly the safe ide
is the best.
In clod weather there should be a fire in
an open fire-place all night, and air enough
will come in at the crevices of the doors and
windows to create a current, driving the
bad air up the chimney. In summer, a
lamp or candle may be burned stauding in
the fire-place unless the door of the hall
is left open ; but as most persons, at least
in cities, do not feel safe to sleep with an
open window or door, the lamp is a good
substitute. A window may I e hoisted, but
there are comparatively so few nights in the
year to make it safe to do ro that the fire
or an open inner door is preferable. There
is no advantage in going to bed or undress
ing in a cold room ; all invalids and seden
tary persons sIioum! undress, sleep, and arise
in a roootn not lower than fifty degrees ; and
if it wa3 seventy while riding so much bet
ter. The old, the sedentary and the cick-
ly should sleep on feather beds in cold wea
ther; it they sleep on matrasses it often re
quires so much bed-clothing to keep them
comfortably warm that it oppresses the
breathing, and so confines the foul air above
the bed as to make them restless. In a
close room the first out breathing contani
inates the whole volume of air in the apart
ment, and this will go on till at last there
is not enough pure air to sustain life, and
the man dies ; but when the hot air comes
in at the ceiling it forces the ba 1 air to the
flK)r, so that if holes are open in the floor
or around the base-bocrd, and the floor is
furred, this bad air escapes in that direc
tion, heating the floor in its passage outward
thus effectually preventing cold floors,
which eauc cold feet, making our w'ves and
daughters cross, and enriching tho doctor
a id apothecary.
Cure Port Ear ache fake a small piece
of cotton batting or cotton wool, make a
depret-un with the finger, and fill it up with
as much ground pepper as will reston a five
cent piece ; gather it into a ball and tie it
up ; dip the ball into sweet oil, insert it in
the ear, covering the latter with the cotton
wool, and use a bandage or cap to retain it
in its pLcc. Almost iast.-int relief will be
experienced, and the application is so gentle
that an infant will not be injured by it, but
experience relief as well as adults.
Preventive of Coi.dFeet. Let a layer
of curled hair be basted to a piece of eloth
and slipped in the stocking ; the hair touch
ing the soles of the feet, will titillate the skin
and draw blood thither. The hair conducts
the moisture from the feet to the woolen
cloth and thus keeps them dry. These hair
soles should be placed before the fire at
nihtso as to be thoroughly- dried by morn
ing. Cork soles absorb moisture from the
shoe and the feet also, and require several
days to be thoroughly dried.
Tea Soi p. A pint and a half of split
peas, two small onions, pepper and salt to
taste. Use three quaits of water and boil
from five to six hours. Pork is often put
in, but it makes the soup far less wholesome.
If the water is hard, add a piece of saleratus
not larger than a pea. It would be difficult
to find a way in which the same amount of
nourishment could be obtained for four
times what this costs. Hearth and Home,
To Cleanse Blankets. Put two large
tablespoonfulsof borax and a pint bowl of
soft soap into a tub of cold water. When
dissolved, put in a pair of blankets and let
them remain over night. Nest day rub and
drain them out, and rinse thoroughly in two
waters, and hang them to dry. Do not
wring them.
Toast Water. Toast slowly a thin pieee
of bread till quite lirown and hard, but not
the least black, plunge in cold water, and
cover it over an hour before used. This is
very tervicable for weak bowels. It should
be a fine brown color before drinking it.
Warts on horses or cows can be cured by
bathing tho wart three times a week with
turpentine and sweet oil mixed.
To increase the lenght of a colt s mane
