1870. m i; 1 ViVi a the armciv LIYIiTO ON A FAEM. How brightly through the mist of years. My quiet country home appears ! My father" busy all the day In ploughing wi n and raking hay ; My mother, moving with delight Among the mi'.W pan3,.silver bright; We children, just from school set free, Filling the garden with our glee. The blood of life was flowing warm When I was living on a form. I hear the sweet church-going bell, Aa o'er the fields its music fell ; I see the country neighbors round. Gathering 'neath the pleasant sound. They stop awhile beside the door, To talk their homely matters o'er The springing corn, the ripening grain, And "how we need a little rain," "A little sun would do no harm, We want good weather for the farm," When autumn came, what joy to see The gathering of the husking-' ?e, To hear the voices keeping tune, Of girls and boys beucath the moon. To mark the golden corn ears bright, More golden in the yellow light 1 Since I have learned the ways of men, I often turn to these again. And feel life wore its highest charm When I was living on a farm. To Cure Smoked Bacon. At thi3 season of the year, all our farmers are preparing to salt their hams and bacon, so we propose to give them a recipe whereby salting and smoking can be done in one sim ple and short process. Many of our house wives are forced to depend upon their neigh- bors for conveniences to sinoke with. Those of us who own smoke houses know how dif ficult it is to smoke just right. By this pro cess much trouble is avoided. Take a large sized butter firkin, cask, or barrel, accord ing to the quantity of meat you desire to Bmoke. Place it over a fire of corn cobs with tho corn on. Meat smoked in this way is higher flavored, the corn seeming to pro- iiuno a kpriAr ratitA rlt.m pons- wnnri. nr crrwn I wainuis. mweiUDSinose irom uvs 10 A great variety of Hosiery, Notions and Trim eix hours. To one hundred pounds of inept j miDgs of every description, Ladies' Trimmed 1 . T . L i p c a take eight pounds of salt, two pounds of coarse brown sugar, (or three pints of mo- 1 ii r 1. 1 - T .u lasses.) and two ounces of saltpetre. Kub I a little fine salt into the hams and shoul ders, then put the meat into the smoked tub, and cover with cold water, turn in the salt, sugar and salt pctre, cover closely, and set in a cool place where it will not freeze. If a scum rises on the brine, turn it off, scald, and add a little more alt. If desired to keep through tbe summer, in the early spring smoke the tub three hours longer, put . , . , rn on the brine when back the meat and turn Tn n.nntl, (W nirLlini i.n linms ' will be ready to use. They can be kept in the brine all summer, and it a ham is cut, return it to the tub for further use. Beef and tongues can be kept in the same manner and there is no danger from insects. Iu six or seven weeks tbe beef is pickled nnd smo ked enough to dry. This is the surest and most expeditious way of salting and smoking pork and beef, and if once tried will always be adopted. Ikarth and Jlnmc, Afteu, Dinnf.r Naps. Many persons are in the habit of Bleeping for half an hour or an hour immediately after dinner. This is a bad practice. Ten minutes sleep before dinner 13 worth more than an hour after. It rests and rofrccbus an 1 prepares the system for vigorous digestion. If sleep is taken after it should be in a sitting posture.as the . horizontal position is unfavorable to health ful digestion. Let those who need rest and sleep during the day take it before dinner instead of after, and they will soon find that they feel better, and that their digestion will 6e improved thereby. To Kill Cattle Lick. Water in which potatoes have-been boiled possesses a poison fatal to lice. Dip into it a large 3ponge or woolen cloth, and wash the cattle freely, choosing a sunny, warm day for the opera tion and as their hides dry, comb with a curry-comb, and see for yourself the effects of the water. In England, cattle of all kinds are curried, as well as horses, an they are improved in flesh and health by the operation, Iiibhmcn always curry their pet cows, and their hair is sleek and soft. Farmers would do well to try this. To CCRE Bots. I have invariably cured every case of bots that I have had on my place, and whenever I could, insist on . my simple remedy. Give one quart of sage tea, in which a large tablespoonful of soda orsalaratusis dissolved. If not relieved in one hour, repeat the dose, and repeat hour iy until relict is obtained. I have seldom givoo more than one dose. Horse Feed. Many English farmers feed no hay to their work horses, but keep them in high working order with straw roots and shorts. The equivalent of twcl tons of hay can be produced on one acre in roots. Farmers in this country will eventu ally bring vegetables more in use as stock feed, for roots are cheap, healthy, and no. union a. The frequent exchange of seeds betwee farmers living eome distance apart makes a great difference in their crops. Some one says if salt is kept before a horse in the stable, he will not gnaw bis manger. Trial will tell. MUST BE SOLD! CLOSING OUT AT COST AT THE 0 KEYSTONE STORE!
