got tht farmer.
Farmi.no. It is with farming as it is
with every other business ; it most be atten
ded to or it will not pay. This is more so
now than formerly. For now machinery
does the work of hand labor, and science is
adding success which the common farmer
cannot reach, hence he is found in the rear
of profit and general success. There must
be intelligence. The advancement of farm
ing has made this so. "Skinning" land
must be among the things that were. This,
however, is less the cae on the prairies
than in the East. An old fashioned farmer
stands but a poor chance there. He is con
stantly selling out to '"better his condition,"
which is not done by buying another farm,
lie is generally glad to get rid of his lani.
We must, then, as the country improves,
improve with it, and that by informing our
selves, both by reading and conversation with
those who know.
A Philadelphia paper says that an emi
nent surgeon of that city had his horses wash
ed in the morning with water in which one
or two sliced onions had been steeped. lie
founds that the flics kept at a respectable
distanoe, while no harm was done to the an
imals. A separate bucket or vessel other
than that used to water" the horses, would
be necessary, and great relief would be ob
tained at a small cost.
A Bafe guide is to watch the trees them
selves. If they grow vigorously, with
shoots of over two feet in length, with no
care, then they need little attention ; but
it only a foot or less, the owner may settle
his mind that he must apply both manure
and cultivation to save his trees. If the
trees grow anually from one to two feet or
more, they are doing well.
A southern slope, with shelter on the
north, is a good location for a vineyard.
The warmth reflected or evolved from ledges
of rock warms the feet of the grape. A dry
gravelly loam or a well drained, clayey soil
is most desirable, and the best grapes are
grown on poorest soil.
