gov itte farmer.
DOFT IfOBTQAOB THE FABM.
We'll hare to mortgage the farm !
Of this there Is little doubt,
And if we fail to redeem,
The sheriff will turn as oat.
And all because we are not content
To earn our money before 'tis spent :
For lawyers seldom allow delay,
And wo have not the wherewith to pay.
Our pride is tare to result in shame.
And we have nobody else to blame.
You certainly ought to know,
If matters continue so,
We'll hare to mortgage the farm.
Chorus The farm, the farm,
The dear old farm.
We'll hare to mortgage the farm.
Suppose we'll mortgage the farm,
'Twill last but a little while,
We can not hope to succeed
In keeping up city style:
The ? ay devoted to formal calls,
The night consumed in attending balls;
For jewelled rings and imported hair,
And trails sufficient to sweep a square,
And silks and satins and laces fine.
Without the wealth of a golden mine,
Are surely enough to show,
If matters continue so,
We'll have to mortgage the farm.
How can we mortgage the farm,
And with it that holy place
Where loye delights to call
The charms of each silent face ?
The golden curls of a darling child,
Iler lustrous eyes and her features mild ;
And one who fell in the battle name,
Where lilliea bloom and the willow waves
About the quiet of household graves.
Ah 1 gloomy indeed the day.
Should we be compelled to ay,
We'll have to mortgage the farm I
r anils in Building.
The American builder enumerates these
faults in planning and erecting houses.
"1st. Cramping a house down to the
em ailed t possible space, so as to make more
"yard room," which will never be Uied.
"2d. Making no calculations as to the
size of rooms or the location of furniture.
"3d, Building chimneys by guess, so that
one has to have a dozen lengths of useless
stove pipe, or else place his stoves in the
most inconvenient locations.
"4th. Arranging windows and doors so
that one opens against the other, or in the
very spot to be occupied by a piece of fur
niture, or so placing them that no fresh air
can get through the house, even though the
whole should be open.
"5th. Providing no means of ventilating
looms, save by open doors or windows
hence all the impure air which is generated
by breathing, cooking, and fermentation, as
it is rarified, rises to the top of the room
and there remains to breed discomfort, dis
ease, and death.
"Cth. Nailing sheathing to the out-iJe
of the studding, and clay boards (or siding)
close to the outside of that, leaving small or
no air chambers between them ; and, as in
nine cases out of ten, green materials for
each covering have been used, they shrink
and rot, soon making a honey comb of the
shell, though plastered with paint and ce
ment. "7th. Laying the lower floor directly
on joints, or, at least, lining it with culls,
full of knots and shakes, which are but lit
tle better than nothing, and, as a conse
quence, the floor is always told and un
comfortable. "8th. In finishing, first laying the base,
plasterers, and casings, (perhaps of green
lumber), and then lathing and plastering up
to them, so that wheu they dry, large orfi
ces are left to let in cold and moisture.
"9th. Letting his work out, as a whole,
trust. ngto the honesty of the contractor to
do it, without having plans or specifications
properly drawn, and without any one to
oversee, criticise, or direct it."
To Glean Faint.
There is a very simple method to clean
paint that has become dirty, and if our
housewives bhould adopt it, it would save
them a great deal of trouble. Provide a
plate with some of the best whiting to be
had, and have ready some clean warm wa
er and a piece of flannel, which dip into
the water and squeeze nearly dry; then
take as much whiting as will adhere to it,
apply it to the painted surface, when a lit
tle rubbing will instantly remove any dirt or
grease. After which, wash the part wel'
with clean water, rubbing it dry with a soft
chamois. Paitit thus cleaned looks as wclj
as when first laid on, without any injury to
the most delicate colors. It is far better
than using soap, and does not require more
than half the time and labor.
SLAJiitlxa Poors. The noise arising
from the slamming of doors is not only very
disagreeable, but is injurious to the door
and its hangings. I do not pretend to give
directions that will prevent doors from clos
ing with violence, but only say how the noise
arising therefrom may be partially avoided.
At the side of the casing, against which the
door rests when closed, glue a thin piece of
rubber (that from off cans or old rubber
boots will answer) or a piece of woolen cloth.
In the absence of glue tacks will subserve
the same purpose. Attach to at Last three
points along the side. When thus arranged
the noise arising from the abrupt closing of
a door will b scarcely perceptible.
