They should be placed in a situation where they, can receive an a bundance of light and air ; otherwise they will become aickly. Plants are frequently injured by injudi cious watering. Some persons seem to think that deluges of water afford a remedy for all the evils to which plants are subject, this is a mistake. True, they require a con siderable amount of moisture, but not one half the quantity which is oftiroes applied. Evening is the best time to water them, and in every case cold water from a cistern or pump should be avoided. The water should be warmed by exposure to the sun, or in some other manner, by bringing to the temperature of the atmosphere before being used. Many plants are retarded in their growth by having cold water poured upon them. The quantity to be applied varies with the size and nature of the flower ; the ground should be thoroughly moistened, but not soaked. If the leaves should be come infested with insects, come tobacco juice, mixed with water and Fprinkled over them, will soon destroy these. The great feature of cultivating plants to promote their health is that which is equally effica cious with human beings cleanliness. Browsing Stock. Those who reside in regions where timber is plentiful can carry sheep and cattle through the winter by sup plying them with Irow&e daily. The trees suitable for this purpose are sugar maple, beach, basswood and birch. Cattle and sheep will leave the best of hay to feed on the buds aud tender twigs of these trces, and we have known them to come out in the spring in fine condition, on this food with an occasional feed of corn in the ear. Where land is being cleared up this aid is readily supplied, as the chopping is usually done in the winter season.but where this is not the case, let trees be felled daily and the limbs chopped down, so that the stock can reach the twigs readily, aud they will get along finely. The safest way is to fell the trees before the stock is let out of the enclosure, lest being on hand when the trees fall, they should be injured or killed in the operation. Rural New Yorker. To IIavk Egos in Winter. A Kansas man says : I let my hens huddle together in some corner, and not let them roost, and get plenty of eggs. I bad about twenty hens and my hen houje was a rough shed about eight feet square, and a window and door on the East. I took down the roosting poles, 1 r . i i , t . icavwK mo nest ooxes only, l made a small board shed about four feet square, on the South side of the large one, and covered it with straw. I made a hole for the hens to pass from the large house into the small one. The result was my hens contin ued to lay all through the winter. I You will have to drive them in a few times but they will soon learn to go in themselves. Put in wood ashes occasionally to keep them free from vermin. There are a great many who are not able to build an extensive hen nery, but any one can fix up a place like this in an hour or two, with very little expense. Much has been written of late about the deodorizing and disinfecting qualities of dry earth, and we notice a remarkable test of it near Melbourne, Australia, where, at the meat preserving works 30,000 sheep are fre quently disposed of in one day. The works are about four miles trom Melbourne. The flesh of the sheep is preserved in tins for the English market. The sheep are driven directly to the pens behind the slaughter houses, where.notwithstanding the immense number killed each day, "there is not the slightest smell, owing to the use of dry earth as a deodorizing agent" Some of the ear liest experiments with dry earth in England were made with the most offensive refuse of slaughter houses, which was almost instant ly rendered entirely inodorous. Farmers, Gardeners aud Housekeepers should never forget to save the seed of eve rything they grow and the very best seed they can pick out Like produces like. Good healthy seed produces good healthy plants, nnd the best varieties are always the cheapest. Ladies should save their flower seeds also, and garden seeds of all sorts. Pick them carefully and preserve them in . j i . ui,, uenLij laueueo. it is a good plan to exchange seeds, as far from home as possible. Growing from the same tock does not do so well either in the vege table or animal world. To make paper stick to whitewashed wall. make a size of common glue aud water, of tne consistency of linseed oil, and apply witn a wmtewash or other brush to the wall, taking care to go over every part, and esDe cially top and bottom. Apply the paper in the ordinary way as soon as you please, and if the paste is properly made it will remain firm for years. A German phrenologist asserts that young pear trees with smooth and red twigs will furnish juicy and well flavored fruit ; while rougn, green snoots indicate mealy, dry and tasteless article. With applcs.rough branch ea indicate sour; smooth branches sweet fruit . FAIRBANKS' STANDARD SCALES, OF ALL CIKDS.
