His taiks as best they may.
The harvest giver is his friend,
The maker of the soil,
And earth, the mother, gives them bread,
And cheers their patient toil.
Come, join them round their wintry hearth
Their heartfelt pleasure see ;
And you can beter judge how blest
The farmer's life may be.
After Potato Digging.
The usual crop after potatoes is weeds,
which have ample time to mature their
seeds before frost comes, and to make trou
ble many years afterwards. Few farmers
estimate the amount' of damage done to
their lands by this untimely seeding. We
have seen land so stocked with charlock,
Canada thistles, and other weeds, that the
cost of all hoed crops upon it was fully
doubled. Their presence depreciates the
value of the oats and barley, and even of
grass. No grain or grass seed St, to be sold
can be raisad upon it, and even the manure
made from the feeding of such crop is less
valuable by rea-sou of foul seeds. Yet many
farmers pres right on, stocking their lands
with weeds, as if they were a most valuable
crop. The potatoes are dug and marketed
in July, or early in August, and the ground
lies waste for the rest of the season. If
crops are not wanted, the opportunity should
be improved to destroy weeds. Plow the
land as soon as the potatoes are off. After
ten days go over it with a harrow. This
will destroy a second crop of weeds. In ten
days more go over it with a brush harrow,
which will destroy a third crop. In two
weeks follow with a harrow, and so on, until
the frost comes in November. A second
crop may be taken from the potato ground.
If not in good heart, sow good super phos
phate, or Peruvian guano, at the rate of
30U pounds to the acre, on the old rows.
Sow turnip seed sparingly upon the fresh
soil, and put them in with a light one horse
harrow or brush ; when the turnips are up,
cultivate between the rows, and keep the
spaces free from weeds. There arc three
months or more between the early potato
harvest and the closing of the ground: and
in thi? time a fine crop of white turnips may
be grown at a cost of less than six cents a
bushel. They are excellent for young cattle,
and will assist materially in making beef
and mutton. Am. Agrieulturut
Tying up Horses.
A correspondent of the Germantown Tel
egraph severely cnudemns the practice in
dulged by too many of "tying up" horses
to their stalls so closely that they cannot lie
d.iwu and take rest like other animals. The
vil and down right cruelty of this practice
lnu.t be obvious. Think of a poor Lor.e
hard driven or worked all day, compelled to
stand on his leirs all night without a bit of
CLTiuine rest. This ''tying up," remarks the
writer, "is re.-iorted to (by grooms as a gen
eral thing) to prevent the animal from lying
3.j.n and thereby becoming dirty, which
c (times necessitates these gentlemen to an
exr using of the curry comb and brush,
& thing objectionable to lazy but not to con
siderate and humane men.
' Let horses when put in the stalls have
sufficient length to their halters that they
may if they choose lie down, one of the best
of eofl effects from this treatment is that
one will rarely ever see a horse so treated
sprung in the knees. 'Tis true that some
horse are not addicted to the good habit of
lying down, and only at night when all is
quiet will they seek rest ; but this is be
cauQ at some time those about thm have
disturbed them at or prevented them from
lying down by shortening their halter, or,
tojuse a technical term,"tying them up." It
is not claimed that by letting a horse lie
down when he chooses that he will-be cured
of sprung knees, because a sprung horse is
incurable ; but it is claimed that if he is at
all inclined to be weak in those parts, such
rest will then even save them.
It is advisable, in the construction of
poultry houses, to use pine lumber the
more pitch it contains the better, as thia b
offensive to poultry vermin.
For mange in calves, the New England
Farmer recommends a solution of one ounce
of carbolic acid in a pint of water. Apply
with a sponge.
The pulp of raw potatoes applied to the
injured part is said, by good authority, to
-ff'rd almost insti.nt relief in cases of burns.
There is a nursery of over 60,000 fruit
trees growing near the old Mission Ridge
battle fi ld, near Chattanooga.
Wild fruit is plenty in Minnesota. I
