Editor .Journal: Dear Sir: Accord
ing to notice given, a large number of the
Republicans of Bradford township aiet at
Sbiloh School House, in Mainea' settlement,
ou Friday evening, October 8th.
The following officers were announced,
viz: President, John M. Kateu ; Vice
Presidents, John Wooldridge, Jos. Winery,
Jacob It. Peters and Henry Graffius ; Sec
retaries, E. Ialeand W. H. Shirey. -
The object of the meeting was then sta
ted in a brief but appropriate manner by
the President, and A. A. Adams, Esq., was
introduced to the audience. Mr. A's re
marks were confined principally to the rec
ords of the two candidates for Gubernatorial
honors ; and, thoueh it was his first attempt,
he did credit to himself and the cause for
which he spoke. At the conclusion of Mr.
A'sreinaiks. T. II. Murray, Esq., was call
ed upon, who, with fluency of speech and
1 ulne.-s of ideas, spread before his hearers
the great principles of the Republican party.
He showed the uistinetii n between the two
parties the progress of the one and the
decline of the other. He discussed the 1 5i h
Amendment, explained the tax question, al
luded to the pardoning 1 owcr which Gov.
Geary has been charged with abusing by the
enemv, and rehearsed the career of Geary
and Packer.
Had it not been for a single individual
who calls himself a Democrat, but would be
better characterized by the name J! Aid
wh af 'empted t dis'nrb use shou'd ha e
had perfect order. This old political ma
niac, howccr, does not belong tp the vicin
ity of Shiloh. and had he not been accom
panied by a drunken man, there would have
been none to notice his insignificant at
temptj to disturb us. Thanks, therefore.to
the Democrat of Shiloh, for their presence
and good behavior.
The meeting was well attended, consider
ing tho shortness of the notice, and adjourn
ed with zuittt and good fueling,
From Seigliboring Couaties.
Jefferson County. On Sunday morn
ing, October 3.1, a little son of P. B. Wea
ver, of P'jnxsutawney, being left alone a
few moments, went to a drawer and getting
an old pistol discharged it, the contents
passing into his stomach. The child lin
gered until 11 o'clock, when death euded
his sufferings.
Centre C'ounxy. On Friday, the 1st
instant, a woman by the name? of tVebster,
the wife of a laborer in the employ of Mr.
Thomas, was accidentally killed on the Rail
road track near Bellefonte, by the Snow
Shoe train. She was walking on the track,
and was called to get out of the way, but ap
parently paid no attention to the warning.
Whether she heard or not, or whether she
was so alarmed and confused as not to know
what she was doing, we do not know ; but
as it was not possible to stop the cars in time
to save her, she was run over, the x.ccident
tearing tfi" one of her arms and cutting oft
a leg. - She only lived a few moments after
the occurrence of thtisad affair.
Br.Aia County. A melancholy accident
occurred on Saturday afterno ni.O.:t. 1st, in
Frni.kstovrn township, in which Mr. Daniel
Null unfortunately lo-t his life. He was in
a field drilling grain, and not coming home
in the evening. hii wife became alarmed and
made search for him,- but rot finding him.
she got several of the neighbors to search
him, when his remains were found in the
field, near some bushes, on the top of the
machine, his face mashed and his neck sup
posed to be broken. It is thought he took
a fit, to which he wa9 subject, and fell with
his head in the wheel. He was found but
a few feet from the scene of the accident,
the horses havingstoptied. His death must
have been instantaneous. Mr. Null was an
estimable citizen, universally respected. He
leaves a wife and two children, and his sad
death is deplored by many friends. . . . Mr.
Joseph Gecfey, an aged citizen of Franks
town, met with a very severe accident on
Sunday morning. October 2nd. Mr. Geesey
bad got out of bed, intending to go down
stairs and get a ds ink of water. Instead of
opening the door rt the head of the kitchen
stairway, be unfortunately opened one over
the basement cellar, and to which no stairs
were attached. lie instantly fell to the
basement, and iu hi.i fall struck an iron hoop
lying upon the top of a keg. A portion of
his no e and the entire uuper lip were com
pletely severed from his face, and his upper
jaw broken. Surgical assistance was imme
diately summoned, and his injuries properly
attended to the jaw re-set, and the nose
and lip sewed on again. Owing to bis ex
treme age, about 70 years, Mr. Geescy's
injuries will be very severe upon him, and
we learn that his friends are very doubtful
of his recovery. . . . The Blair county Ag
ricultural Fair was a decided success. . . The
Altoona Park Association Fair, was all that
its projectors anticipated a complete suc
cess in all its details.
