Notice Yocr Fowls. A somewhat no
ted English writer says : "The more notice
there is taken of fowls, we believe, the Let
ter they will bo. In a natnrnl state they
woulJ. no tluubt, lay a batch or two of ctrs
in a season, hatch them, ami con-Mer the
end of egg production fulfilled. In a do
mesticated state, we wish them to rear the
advisable number of brood., "id.iti addition,
to continoe to lay euss a many months m
the year as is commensurate with their well
doing; therefore, the further we remove
oar fowls from ibe wild state to perfect
domestication that is, the tamer wc can
make tbem, the letter for ourselves and
their happiness. Noti,thcrefore,theyoung
broods and the old fowl, and let the child
ren notice them too (not handle them, for
chickens should never be caught unnecessa
rily), and your fowls will repay good feeding
by doing good service. "
Cutting Corn. Farmers have began
cutting corn iu Berks county. The old
mode of "topping" it has been generally
abandoned for the reason that by cutting the
fodder is all saved, and the fields arc at once
cleared and ready for a new crop. If corn is
cut and stacked in good season, the cattle
will eat all but the but of the sulk ; and the
labor of cutting as well as hulking is lessen
ed. Tie season for cutting is when the
kernels, two-third the distance up the ear,
are well seared or hardened, and the top of
each ear well advanced into the dough. If
it is allowed to stand later than this, the
stalks die, and are thus very much injured
for fodder, if not entirely worthless, and l.e
corn loses something of the sweetness that
belongs to it if left to harden (in tho rain)
after the stalk b severed from the root.
limduig Journal.
Labor. There is much truih in tho
statemect that none so little enjoy life, and
are such burden to themsclvcs,as those who
have nothing to do. The active only have
the true relish of life. lie who kuows not
what it is to labor, knows not what it is to
enjoy. Recreation is only enjoyable as it
unbends us. The idle know nothing of it.
It is exertion that renders rest delightful,
and sleep sweet and undisturbed. That the
happiness of life depends on the regular
prosecution of some laudable purpose, or
lawful calling, which engages, helps and en
livens all of our powers, let those bear wit
ness who, after spending years in active use
fulness, retire to njoy themselves; they
can find leisure a burden rather than a
pleasure.
A citizen of Fair Haven, Connecticut,
after an experience of some years, has con
cluded that it pays a profit of about 100 per
cent- to raise chickens. He keeps a book
and writes down a daily account of the eggs,
and commencing in July, 1S6S, to August,
1369, he obtained from a start of fifty hens
5,752 eggs, the yield being divided among
the months as follows: July 521, August
506, September C20, October 128, Novem
ber 239, December 359, Jauuary 313, Feb
ruary 502, March 665, April 963, May 601,
J une 525. The yield this year is rather
better than that of last year during the
same period, and he has now 33 hens which
lay from 12 to 13 egg? daily.
Dryiso Fruit. A correspondent of the
Rural World finds an ordinary hot bed a
capital place for drying fruit. A floor is
laid inside on which to place the fruit. Then
put on the sash, raising both ends about two
inches, to admit a free circulation of air, or
the fruit will bake as in an oven. Here the
fruit wilt not be wet in a shower.nor troubled
by insects, which will be kept away by the
covering and the intense heat. Parboiled
green corn has been sufficiently dried in one
day this way.
An individual of much practical experi
ence says that green elder, deposited in and
about mows of hay or grain, will prove an
effectual preventive against the depredations
of rata and mice. These animals are fre
quently very destructive in their ravages,
and if a remedy so simple and easy of at
tainment be efficacious, it deserves to be
known and remembered by all. We have
long known that the stalk.s of the common
mullen will drive rats from their haunts.

Gcnnantown Telegrayh says he has a vine
of this much lauded grape, planted six years
ago, which thouglr it contained a bunch or
two last year, has an abundant crop at the
present time of green fruit that will never
come to maturity. Out friend says that
the Iona may do in certain latitudes, but in
this it is comparatively worthless.
It is stated that if kerosene lamp wicks
are soaked in strong vinegar for twenty-fuur
hour, and thoroughly' dried before used, all
smoke will be avoided, the wick will last
twice as long, and an increased brilliancy
will be obtained.
If poultry is infested with lice, damp the
ekin under the leathers with water,' then
sprinkle a little sulphur ou the skin. Let
the bird be covered with insects or para
sites, they will disappear in the course of
