    . or the farmer.
- Cora Stalks.
The practice of placing corn stalks uncut
before cattle, still prevails in many parti of
the country. The blades are eatcu off, the
tender part of the tops perhaps, consumed,
and the rest left on the ground to decay.
We have long since advocated the cutting
and steaming of corn stalks, aud their ad
mixture with small quantities of ground
feed, to induce the cattle to consume them.
With such treatment we 'succeeded in hav
ing them cleanly eaten up, but when the
Btalks are cut and not steamed, even when
when supplied with a small quantity of
moistened feed, great waste occurs. The
largest pieces are left by the animals. More
recently we have experimented in catting
these stalks much finer, and will lie glad to
have a machine cutting them as thin as wa
fers. We also think that those who have
horse power for running their cutting box
es, will find it to their advantage to pass
the com stalk, before cutting, through a
pair of plain rollers, so as to completely
crush their silecious coating. The outside
.of the corn stalk loses its aramo and be
comes distasteful to cattle, while its Lard
coating renders it difficult fur them to mas
ter it. A plain pair of turned iron rollers
four inches in diameter and six inches long,
and set with a spring of sufficient force to
crush the corn stalk, would crush more than
a ton in an hour with great ease ; and we
cannot but believe, that after such treat
ment, these stalks passed through a cutting
box or chaffing machine, would furnish a
fodder very acceptable to cattle, for it would
then be soft, and free from the objections
urged against corn stalks in their natural
state.
The analysis of the corn stalk shows its
value as food for cattle to be very consider
able, and the immense crop now raised of
staple, warrants every experiment for the
economical use of the stalks, to be carefully
made. We shall try this system, and hope
to induce others to make similar experi
ments. Plan of a Corn Crib.
I built a corn crib a few years ago, which
I think, for convenience, has but few equals.
It has never failed to keep corn perfectly,
and is likewise rat proof. It can easily be
filled without the ordinary way of making
doors in the roof, which are so difficult to
make tight. The dimensions are as follows ;
Length, 30 feet ; width, 4 feet at sills and 5
feet at plates, with a projection in the mid
die six feet long across the crib. The main
posts are 8 feet from top of sills to top of
plates. The posts to the projection arc six
feet and two inches. The sills are four by
six, and should be of some durable wood, as
they are exposed more to the weather than
the rest of the frame. It stands upon sev
enteen posts, set in the ground two and a
half leet, resting on flat stones, and twenty
inches above ground, fised in the usual way
with tin milk pans inverted over theta, which
should have the wire rims cut off, as rats
sometimes catch ly these and asscend. The
plates are three ly seven inches; posts four
Dy sn inches. The size of the Umber is
immaterial some would not think mine
large enough, but it answers all purpose.
The roof is of twenty iucb cypress shingles.
ana extends a foot over the eaves. The
sides are of pine lath, two inches wide, put
on up and down, just wide enough to keep
the smallest ears. The middle part is cov
JulIO ifoarus, wun a uoor m one
side. Id filling the crib, loose boards are
nsed to keep the corn in each end, leaving
the middle space for shelling the corn and
storing the cobs, which I consider worth
Ting.
