. The Crow's Value t Farmers.
Whatever wrong th crow commits a
, gninst the cultivation of the soil may, by a
little painstaking, be materially lessened or
wholly prevented. The beueSts he confers
are both numerous and important. Daring
the time he remains with he destroys, so
says no less authority than Wilsou : "my
riads of worms, moles, mice, caterpillars,
grubs and beetles.'" Audubon also affirms
that he devours myriads of grubs every day
of the year grubs that would lay waste the
farmer's fields, and destroys quadrupeds in
numerable, every one of which is an enemy
to his poultry and his flocks. Dr. Harris
also one of the most faithful and accurate
observers, in speaking of the fearful rav
ages sometimes wrought in our grass lands
and gardens by the grub of the May beetles,
adds his testimony to the great service ren
dered by the crow in keeping these pests in
check. Yet, rfardiessof such testimony
in their favor, we have nearly exterminated
these birds, and the destructive grubs, hav
ing no longer this active enemy to resist
their growth, are year by vear increasing
with fearful persistence. We have seen
large farms in which over entire acres, the
grass was so completely under mini d and the
roots eaten away that the loosened turf
could be rolled up as easily as if it had been
cut by the turning spade. In the same
neighborhood whole fields of corn, potatoes,
and almost every kind of garden vegetables,
had been eaten at the root and destroyed.
Our more intelligent farmers who have
more carefully studied the cause of this un
usual insect growth, have satisfied them
selves that it is the legitimate result, the
natural and incviu'.e consequence, of our
own acts. Our short sighted and murder
ous warfare upon the crow has interrupted
the harmonies of nature, distracted h'-r well
adjusted ballance. and let loose upon agri
culture its enemies, with no adequate means
of arresting their general increase. Atlan

Cider making for Vinegar.
W. H. Ragan, in the last report of the
Indiana Horticultural Society, says that he
assorted his market apples of good varie
ties, and used the small irregular specimens
for cider. He obtains more for the selected
fruit thu3 obtained, than for the whole un
assorted, the poor ones spoiling the appear
ance of the whole. lie found it important
to keep everything clean ; in one case, a
barrel of cider was spoiled by spilling some
petroleum on the head, although none en
tered at the bung-hole. Hand mills were
worthless. The best mill that he had found
was a greater mill, with a ten inch cylinder
ia length and diameter, driven full of shoe
maker's heel tacks, which were then ground
down to about one-eighth of an inch in
length with a file. Attached to a shaft,
and driven by one or two horses, it would
grind a bushel per minute, so fine that many
of the seeds were cut up. The mill was on
a frame, over a large vat, holding 60 or 80
bushels of apples when ground. The pom
ace lay in this vat 12 to 36 hours, varying
with the temperature of the weather. It
the seeds are much cut, the time must be
shorter, as thoy impart a bitter taste. The
cider is better than if pressed immediately
after grinding. President Nelson furnished
a valuable essay on making cider for vine
gar, and spoke of the detestable stuff sold
generally, composed of oil of vitriol and va
rious drugs. The only good vinegar, of the
best quality, is made from pure cider. It
has a peculiar, rich, aromatic odor, by which
it is distinguished from the common spuri
ous stuff although attempts are made to im
itate its odor, by adding fusil oil and burnt
sugar. The best vinegar is not injured by
freezing, but the 'acid" vinegar has been
entirely spoiled rendered putrid by freez
ing a single night. Some of this material
is called "wine vinegar," and was claimed
to be made from wine a pretence obvious
ly false, as no wine was so low in price as
the best vinegar.
Grxasb Yoeu Whxkls. "Some per
sons may not be aware," says Ilieover in
his work, Bipeds and Quadrupeds, "that
the trifling neglect of a pair of wheels be
ing comparatively dry or well greased will
cause twenty miles to take far more work
out of ahorse than forty would in the latter
case; yet wheels absolutely screaming from
dryness are often seen and heard attached
to cart and wagons ; and thus would the
brute in human form let them scream till he
had finished his journey's end or his daj's
work, though his horse were drawing, from
such cause, at least one ton more than if
the defect were attended to."
Potato Yeast. Bail eight potatoes,
mash them fine ; add to them a pint of sift
ed flour, two tablcspoonfuls of brown sugar,
half a teaspoonful of salt, three pints of
boiling water. When cold, add a teacup
full of hop veast. When fermented, put in
a jar and cork tight
Don't keep a calf tied or shut up in some
damp, dark corner, with hardly room
enough to lie down. He needs the san
blane as much as hens, or the plants in the
garden.
