i Drilling Wieat.
The season approaching for seeding down
wheat we would orge the benefit of drilling
in the seed with a machine, instead of broad
cast sowing. Nothing in agricultural prac
tice, now-a days, may be said to be better
established than this, a3 every one knows
who has ever tried it ; and the reports last
season in the Department at Washington,
from all sections of the country, showed the
grain in bushels per acre to be in some sec
tions 20 and 25 per cent, with the drilled
wheat. It is lound to be much less liable to
be thrown out by frosts or winter killed, and
the free action of the atmosphere through
the drills in the field, the uniforn depth at
which it is covered, causing an evenness in
the growth, together with at least one peck
less seed being required for sowing, are all
advantages of drilling, connected also with
securing a better taking of the grass seed.
Drills, as with other farm machinery, have
been greatly improved the last few years,
-and are now constructed not only to sow
wheat, oats, rye, &c, in given quantities,
but also to bow with it, grass seed and fer
tilizers in the rows, with the grain ; so that
the soil being previously well prepared, the
whole is finished at one operation, and the
ground left in a nice, smooth condition.
The ridges left by the drill are leveled down
by the frosts of winter, giving additional
protection to the tender roots of the grain
and grass.
Prosecutirjg Careless Farmers.
The West Chester IljvLUcan states that
during the session of the Legislature of
1SC7, through the influence of a Farmer's
Club in that county, a bill was passed appli
cable alone to Chester county, making it a
penal offense for "any person or persons,
owning, possessing, or occupying and hold
ing land or lands, "in the countr of Chester,
to allow either or any of the following weeds
to mature seed on land owned by him or
them, vii : The common mullcn, the moth
inullen, wild carrot, Canada thistle, horse
nettle and ox-eye daisy. Any person own
ing, occupying or holding land upon which
said weeds, or either of them, shall be found
with matured seed, shall be deemed and ta
ken as maintaining a nuisance, ami shall be
subject to such penalties as are now, by law,
imposed." Railroad companies are also
made liable to the same provisions.
The two first cases that have occurred un
der the law, took place before Justice
Whitehead, of West Chester, last week.
Mr.Ferdiuand Wood made complaint against
John Ortlep for allowing ox eye daisies, and
other noxious weeds to mature upon his
property. He was held to bail in the sum
of flOO, to answer the charge. Subsequently
Ortlep made complaint against Wood, for
the same offense, and he was likewise held
to answer. Both parties reside in the town
ship of Londonderry.
Potatoes for Cattle. Immense good,
says an old farmer, would result to the coun
try if coarse varieties of the potato were in
creased and brought to bear great yields for
consumption for cattle. The Cutco or any
other heavy bearing potato might be en
couraged or forced so as to give still heav
ier crops, if the came attention were paid
to them as is done to those sorts for human
food. Fotatoes too have more solidity in
them than turnips, beets or carrots ; a less
number of bushela would suffice and every
body knows how to grow them. Five hun
dred bushels per acre, and ten acres con
sumed annually on a farm of one hundred
acres, would soon increase the productive
ness of the whole of the land, because the
manure would be so much more, as well as
better in quality ; besides, where the tillage
is as it should be, a potato crop always leaves
the land in an excellent state for the ensu
ing crop. About thirty years ago I was in
the habit of growing great quantities and
steaming them for hogs, the yield being be
tween three and four hundred bushels per
acre. Uneyear, in consequence of several
acres of wheat having been destroyed by
wire worms, I had an extra quantity which
I had steamed for milch cows. It happened
when hay was scarce, and I had these
steamed potatoes mashed and mixed with
barley straw cut into chaff, and the whole
winter dairy cowa did better than ever be
fore. I have known them to give cattle
feeding for beef, with good effect, fed raw ;
and though they will never take the place
of swedes, etc., for cattle food, yet it will
be a great end gained if a proliSe kind of
potato can be brought into use for feeding
to the live stock.
Stam iWs.-There are now five Eng
lish steam plows running in this country.one
in Kentucky, one in Te and three in
Louisiana. They cost about 15,000and
give great satkfaction, as they do the work
of twenty or thirty horses with the labor of
two or three attendant. In England there
are two thousand of these plows, and in
Egypt four hundred. They run a gang of
from three to six plows, and pulverize as
deep as fourteen inches. They can go much
deeper if the farmer wishes. Two or three
inventors are working out the Yankee steam
Plow. One propose, to build, for about
pOOO, an engine that will move back and
forth on the line of a wirroap fasteueJ
the heailands to a. Hlf advancing anchor.
