TiiE 2?jlh'cin pays that the County
Cou.iuissioaers did uot refuse the Court
House to the soldiers widow and orphans',
nor did they give it to Gon'd Rogers not,
having been aske-i for it by cither. We
make the correction accordingly having no
de.-ire to charge the distinguished trio with
anyihitig of which thc-y are not Ruiiiy.
But how did Rogers get the Court House?
He did delivvsr a lecture in it- Somebody
must have given him the keys. Who wash?
Moreover Mrs. Wodwor!h did apply for
the Court House and was refused. She
was sent to the office end r.sV.ed the person
she found there whJ sccxed to be in au
thority. He refused her, Setlt.g for the
Commissioners. On irirjuiry we learn that
the person was Mr. Bradley, who, though
removed as clerk, still bangs about the of
fice, suported by the county in some ca
pacity or other.
The borough athorities as well as the
citizens, should take the preliminary steps
towards securing a supply of water. It
must tie apparent to any one who will give
the subject a moments thought, that it will
not be loiig until our wei's will have to be
abandoned. As the population of the town
inctea-ses, and it becomes more compactly
built, the wells the sandy bam will be
destroyel Moreover the large number of
wooden buildings going up, renders it ex
tremely probable that we will be troubled in
the future with fi.-es to an extent for which
our past experienoe has not prepared us.
To extit:guish these we must have water and
pressure. As a security both against fire
and disease a supply of water is indispensi
ble. As contribution to cleanliness and
eomf 'it it will be invaluable while the fa
cilities it will a?jrd for manufacturing pur
ines will aid to the extent and properity
of the town. View I he subject as you will,
the conclusion is itTesistable that we must
have water works.
A CAREFCL exaniinatioa and analj-sis of
the xitc ores alleged to be found along
CieaiGeld ertsrk, and a couiparisoa with tbe
ores i f Sinking Valley show them to be i
denticah In other words, the ore said to be
brought here from Clearfield creek, rea'.ly
came from the zitic Wurks at Birmingham
in Hnntinglju cjuuty. The sa-je persons
whJ, a few years Ego, "planted" the oil
springs in this viiiiniry, are aueiupiiiig an
other swindle, by pretending to fad valua
ble ores where they do not exist, or where
they have previously been j laced for the
purpose of deception, in order to induce
land owners to pay for the information, or
to get capitalists to purchase worthless lani
We warn our readers to bz on their guard,
and to believe nothing, and ai nothing,
until the localities where the ores are alleg
ed 'to exist are jointed out, aad examined
by a com pet cut njincrulogisr.
We sincerely hope for the prosperity of
our couuty, that valuable deposits of metal -ic
ore will yet be discovered, but we should
just as sincerely regret a repetition of the
gross fraud perieu-ated a few years ago by
4oil springs"' manufactured for the purpose.
It was a disgrace and ii.jury to our county,
aud resulted in no benefit to anybody. -
