U)c Kaf&man's gonmd, kaxfdb, a., epf erofiiT l, 1869. got the inxmtx. The Treatmanit of Sick Animals. The crying evil of the agriculture of this country is, that we have no good system of veterinary instruction. Except in th large cities, and, indeed, in most of those,it is iui poawble to find a well educated veterinary surgeon. Throughout the whole length and breadth of the land, our poor dumb brutej, condemned to stlffer from diseases generally brought about by our own carelessness or neglect, are obliged to bear the still greater suffering of barbarous treatment of common farriers and quacks, who know almost noth ing about the organization of their bodies. As a natural consequence, violent purging!, frightfdl Llood-letting, blisters and firings, are applied without thought and without reason, entailing untold agony to the ani mal, and generally much loss to the owner. Of course, when an animal is sick, any fanner who is ignorant of what Bhould be done ought to secure the best advice within his reach. But he should always retain .so much control over the treatments as to avoid a resort to barbarous remedies, unless the unskilled practitioner can convince him that there is good reasoD for it; for, as a general rale. an animal left to the unguided curative process of nature would come better out of its troubles than if subjected to the opera tion of brutal means for the restoration of its health. With animals, a wich men, there is far too much medicine-giving, blistering and bleeding ; and probably more are killed or permanently injured by these practices than are cured by them. Of course, in some desperate cases, they are necessary, but they should always Le resorted to with caution, and with much hesitation. In all minor diseases, which result almost invariably from bad air, food, filth and neglect, the wisest treatment is the removal of the cause and the restoration of those simple, natural conditoua upon which the return, no less than the maintenance, of health is based. The purging ball may often be with advant age supplanted by a loosening diet, bleeding, almost invariably by such a diet and pure air. Warm clothing and thorough groom ing will usually do the work of a blister, aivl do it much better. In all cases of sprains, bruises, and wounds, water is an almost sovereign remedy and in nine tenths of the cases in which it is thought neccs-sary to send for the local horse doctor, tbe simple treatment above indicated will be found nat only cheaper, but far better in its applica tion and in its effects. Amcri&tn Agricul turist. Good and Bad Parm Stock. There is no fact, in agriculture more fully established than that it will not pay to keep poor stock, when it is possible to secure that of better quality. The cost of keeping an inferior cow is precisely the same as that of a better one. A good horse will always cammand a better price in the market, or is more valuable to its owner for his own pur pose than a poor one. The cost of keeping is the same. Why not, then, raise the best horses? There are breeds of swine that grow rapidly and fatten on much less food, and in a shorter time than others. Why not pro cure these improved kinds? The same may be said of sheep, poultry, and in fact, every kind of farm stock, and yet we find thou sands of farmers in the face of these iucon trovertible facts, arraying themselves in steady hostility to sjl movements Laving for their object the improvement of domestic farm animals. They cling to inferior stock with a pertinacity that is surprising. In order to produce thoroughbred stock into a neighborhood (if the first cost is an objection,) half a dozen farmers could unite, and thus make up the amount necessary for procuring first class animals. The time has gone by for cambering our farms any longer with scrubs. Let us go in for l.aviug the best. Gardening for YToraeii. There is nothing better fbr wives unJ daughters, physically, than to have the care of a garden a flower pot, if nothing more. VTiat is plc'&aiiter than to spend a porijon of every passing day workicg among plants, and watching the growth cf bhrubs, and trees, and plants, and to observe the open ing flowers from week to week as the season advances? Then how mm -5 it adds to the enjoyment to know that your own banJd have planted and tilled them, and bave pruned and trained them. This is a pleas ure that requires neither great riches or profound knowledge. The huralle cotta. ges of the laboring poor, not less than their grounds, may be adorned with pet plauta, which in due time become radiant with beau ty, thus ministering to the love of the beau tiful in nature. Th wifo or daughter that loves bome.&nd would 8eekf ever to make it the beat place for husband and brother, is willing to forego om gossiping morning calls, for the aake of having leisure for the cultivation of planus Bhrubs and flowers, as is the husband at his place of business. It is said that one of the most powerful remedies for hots iu horses is a strong de- wcuoa of sage tea, made very sweet. U ('Sslod'ea tho hots instantly. ' WINE & LIQUOR STORE- I. L.
