Wdfmmx9 journal, earficfb, 1j?a., jlitgitgf 111869 .fur the farmer. The Poor Fanner. ' YTe saw the other day in one of our ex changes, a littla paragraph with this head ing, in which it was justly said that a "poor farmer cannot conceal the fact that he is a poor farmer." Nothing can be truer. His work lies before the world. Every pa.-er can look upon it and ret ord hia judgement. There are his house, his barn, his out-buildings, Lis implements, his horses and cattle. If he is a poor farmer it will be seen in all these. His very house-yard and barn-yard Bpeak of his want of industry and thrift, in clear language. Yet tbere is no one more difficult to instruct or reform than the man who is determined to pursue his own wretch ed course, in the face ot all his neighbors and the whole community. And there arc two reasons for it. First, he loves the ruin bottle ; and if not this, then he is naturally lazy and a poor devil generally. Iu cither case he ha? no future to live and work for; no pride or solf-respect. If he is fpoken to on the subject he replies that he thinks bis mode of managing his farm the best ; be was a farmer bred, his father a farmer be fore him ; and he has nothing to learn from the jimcrack course of modern days, by which, though the land may yield uure.the cost in making it do so Lt fur more than what he loses. As to his iinplemcnU,wheo they are worn-out, he may think about gat ing others, but sees no use in throwing tools away that answer well enough. As to his honse and garden, they are the same his father had, and if they were good enough for hia father, what right bad he to com plain ? lie has little to send to market, and that a kind neigLbor takes and sells for htai. Ask him why he dees not raise more for marketing, and he replies that it does not pay ; the time and expense consumed in go ing to market, the wear and tear of horses and wagons, comes to more than what can be made out of it. lie has reckoned it out and knows. If asked why he does not sub stitute a different variety of corn, oats, or other grain, for that from which he derives only half a crop, he replies that he gets a long well enough with what he has.and it is adapted to his land, while new sorts may not be. Everything is managed or mismanaged in the same way. Look at the broken shelv ings of hia hay-wagin ; his cart with a wood en linchpin iu one of the axles; the wheel barrow with one leg ; the roller, plows and harrows exposed all the year round to the weather, and some of them still lying where they were last used ; the gears tied up with twine ; the barnyard fence broLen and the cattle roaming through the inedows aud tearing to pieces his couple of poor hay. stacks ; the hogs rooting up the orchard and eating up the roots of the remaining grass ; the fence in front of the house blown over by the wind three or tour months ago and still lying there ; the approach to the house thick with mud; coal-ashes, flat stones or boards are to be seen. Everything indeed is in keeping, and however unplcasing and even painful it may be to others, and how ever impossible it may seem to others that the poor farmer cannot but see it and de plore it too, though helpless to improve, it is not so. Ha docs not sec it. He will not know it. lie likes it as it is! German town Telegraph. The Turnip Crop. The Germantown Telegraph remarks: There is no crop that the farmer can put in the ground which pays him better than the turnip. We are aware that with some per sons, it is looked upon as of little account ; bat it has never received the consideration to which it is justly entitled, and those who turn up their noses at it are not genuine farmers. It is a crop moreover that is put in at a time when the hurrying work of the season is over; and it occupies ground that has al ready been used for something else. The cultivation also, Bay of from one to two acres of turnips, involves comparative ly little labor. The crop, too, is harvasted in November, when there is almost no other labor on the farm to interfere with it. As to the variety of seed to sow, we be lieve there is no turnip equal to the purple top. A top dressing of bone manure is al most indispensible to an abundant crop. For an early crop take the Early Flat Dutch and sow broadea-t in J uly. The Pur ple top for the regular farm crop. This 6houid be eowod in drills thirty inches apart and wheu the turnips are the size of a hick-ory-nut, thin out to eight or ten inches apart in the row. They seldom fail in affordine a satisfactory crop. Where the land is a little short, kw among the corn of the last working. They will not interfere in the least with that crop generally, and very little when it is harvest ed. Be sure always to procure seed from es tablished seed-houses of reputation, and use that grown here instead of in Europe, if you wish the best and safest article. Dry coppera strewed about ant-nests will induce them to leave them and not re- turn. S j s:ys one who has tried it. " CCRWjJJiSYILLE ADVERTISEMENTS, A M H RIGA N II O USE, (JurwensviHe, l'a.
