ab!v the Question of
ilAI. l-'J -
the great advantage of cutting hay whcB
in agree state has nbeea taken up by some
of our agricultural publications, al hough
there can be no doubt concerning the pro
priety of doing so, for every farmer who
cuts a second crop knows how superior it is
fr milk-producing and feeding purposes
generally, when compared with hay which
has been cut while in a ripe siate.and when
almost all the saccharine matter in it has
gone to constitute woody fiber. No season
has been more f avorable for a trial of the ear
ly mowing plan than the prwwnt, wbich.so far
as we can Icarn.prouiises to be good, for two
crops if the first is seasonably harvested
and when the rowen or second crop may
turn out as iiberal in quantity as the first
one. . The subject "13 one which farmers
would do well to think over and act upon,
even should hoeing be partially neglected
whea the mowing season comes. In con
nection with this subject, the method
of
drying hay in the shade, in the cock and
partially in the mow, may also be consider
ed. ,
To Make Cows Give Milk. A writer
who says that his cow gives all the milk
that is wanted in a family of eight persons,
and from which was made two hundred and
fifty pounds of butter this year, gives the
following as bis treatment. lie says: "If
you desire to get a large yield of rich milk,
give your cow three times a day water
slightly warm, slightly salted in which bran
has been stirred at the rate of one quart to
two gallons of water. You will find if you
have not tried this daily practice, that your
cow will give twenty per cent more milk im
mediately under the effect of it, and she will
become so attached to the diet that she will
refuse to drink clean water, unless very
thirsty, but this mess she will drink almost
any time and ak for more. The amount of
this drink necessary is an ordinary water
fail fall each time, morning, noon and night.
Four hundred pounds of butter arc often ob
tained from good stock, and instances are
mentioned where the yield was even at a
higher figure. Alass. Ploughman.
Rolling Grain in the Spring. If
farmers would look at the theory of rolling
the wheat and rye fields in the spring, says
the Germautown Telegraph, it would be re
sorted to much more than it is. Occasion
ally the winter and spring have been so fa
vorable to these crops as not to render it
recossary. But in three seasons out of four
it is necessary, and doubtless adds to their
productiveness. The thawings and freezings
of the ground, throwing or spewing out the
roots and exposing them to the drying winds
of February and March, very seriously effect
the grain. Passing a iollerover as soon as
the soil is fit to enter upon, presses back the
roots iuto their beds and gives them a fair
grip again upon the snpport on which the
crop must depend. This must be apparent
to every one who will look at its operation.
We have no doubt that rolling clover fields
that have been badly thrown up by the frost
would also have a beneficial effect.
Medical Properties op Celery. I
have known many niea and women too, who
from various causes, had become so affected
with nervousness that when they stretched
out their hands they shook like aspen
leaves on windy days and after a daily
moderate use of the blanched foot stalks of
celery leaves as a salad they became as
strong and steady in limbs as other people.
I have known others so very nervous that
the least annoyance put them in a state of
agitation, and they were almost in constant
perplexity and fear, who were also effect
ually cured by a daily moderate use of
blanched celery as a salad at meal times. I
have known others cured by using celery
for palpitation of the heart. Everybody
engaged in labor weakening to the nerves,
should use celery daily in season, and on
ions in its stead when not in season. Cor.
Prac. Farmer.
Sweet Potato Raising. My way of
raising sweet potatoes is in hills always. I
make the hills three feet apart, each way,
and make them about eight inches above
the level of the grond, leaving the top of the
hill flat. Always set the plants in the even
ing, and just before a rain, or just after. Set
the plants a little deeper than they were in
the hot-bed, so, if the worms should cut
them off, they will grow again from the
stub. By so doing you will save transplant
ing. Always pick a sandy spot of ground, if
possible, to plant in. They will need hoe
ing twice, and plowing three times. I will
ensure a. crop if so treated. You can raise
200 bushels on an acre of ground. West
ern Rural.
Beans. There is a differenc in the hardi
ness of garden beans ; and only the more
hardy kinds should be planted till the mid
dle or latter part of the month. Lima and
the more tender pole beans, succumb to a
light frost. lwarf or bush "varieties may
be planted a little earlier, and if frost is
threatened, a board may be laid over the
row, resting on blocks or bricks to avoid
crushing the plants. TheGermantown Tel
egraph says that greasing the beans before
planting prevents them from rotting, and
docs not injure their germination.
