Properly managed pasture lands should
yield a larger profit then any other, but
producing na more than th estini t above
stated, the land at sixty to eighty dollars is
not a good investment A Urge portion of
our pasture lands are clay soils, which in
eight or ten yrs ater they are seeded
down, become so compact that a full crop
cannot be produced for the reasons already
stated. Tt.ey must be broken up to a
depth of eight or tea inches in the fall or
winter, if poible. Af er being thus ex
posed to the action of the frost in winter,
let it be exposed to the ameliorating influ
ence of the sun in summer, by the constant
stirring required ia the cultivation of the
corn crop. When again put in grass, tho'
intended only for pasture, a liberal supply of
red clover should be sown without the other
graase--, not si nn h on ace ui t f the pas
ture it will produce, (though for one or two
y.ars this will be an important item,) aa
the effect it will have with its extensive
roots in enriching the soil and rendering it
friable and mellow, thus promoting the
growth of other grasses. When the clover
has made a good start, about the latter part
of the month of May, a good dressing with
plaster must not on any account be omit
ted, say a biuhel and a ha'tf to the acre, to
be sown in the morning when the dew is

ion as to what is the best kind to use, we
wl'l give several recipes which are re com
mended by good authorities Baker says
"Take oce part tallow, one part beeswax
and two parts reoin. The tallow and bees
wax should be melted first, then the resin
aod the whole poured together and well
stirred. After it is well mixed, it id poured
in small quantities into a tub of cold water
and worked like molasses caudy. No more
should be poured into the water at a time
than can be worked at once as it will cool
very quickly and require to be melted again.
It should be carried in a pot of hot water
and the hand of the operator should be
smeared with some oily substance. For
some of the smaller grafts, use waxed paper.
For this purpose strips oi paper are floated
in the melted wax for a rxoweut, so as to
only moisten one side, and then be permit
ted to eooL"
Tnomas gives this: "Linseed oil, one
pint; resin. six pounds: beeswax, one pound
melted together, to be applied warm with a
brush or to be put on paper or muslin, or
worked with wet hands into a mass, and

trees succeed best when planted out in the
Spring. Trees one year old from the bud
are the most suitable fur setting out. A

cially drained is best suited fur the peach,
and oext to this a strong, mellow loam ;
then a Vfcht, thin, iandy soiL If your soil

from four to six feet diameter and one foot
deep and fill it with new rich, mellow soil
mixed with broken bones, wool ashes, soot,
lime, plaster and charcoal, these manures
being specially adapted for the peach.
Peach trees, may be planted between the
trees. 4) feet apart with good results in
ynung apple orchards. In old ones the roots
of the apple trees would enroaeh on the
peaches and rob the soil of its best ingredi
ents. Land for peaches should be a little
elerated ar-ove the average ground level.
