The ralue of straw as a feeding subptanee
was never better proved than by the follow
ing fact: A firm having a large number of
heavy wagon horses, had frequent occasion
for the yerterinary -nrg(-on, until they were
recow mended to mix a certain portion of
fine cat straw with the clover Lay. This lias
bten practiced now for some year, and tbo'r
bill for hpre-d'"ctonng is at a minimum.
The partner of the firm who told ine thw,
said how advantageous it was not to bts de
prived, as they formerly were, of the use
of several horses to say nothing of the
saving in expense and loss. The fact is, the
food was too rich or too mucilagioons, f.jr I
have often been told that fine cut hay, un
mixed with ?traw chaff, balls in the stomach,
and thus is, I suppose deprived of the ac
tion of the gastric juices. We know that
too succulent or rich grasses are injurious,
and no doubt straw chaff mixed with it acta
mechanically, if not chemically, with advan
tage. It would be well for our agricultural
friends to know that for several thousand
horses belonging to the London General
Omnibus Company, the food Ls all passed
through the chaff cutter with, I believe, a
certain proportion of straw. While spring
grazing our bullocks on tares, we mix straw
with them in their early growth, but as
they advance to flowering and podding, this
is not required, because there Ls much wheat
and oats grown with this, whkh gets inter
mixed on passing through the chaff machine.
Tuk Secuet of Cheap Pork. "What
is the secret of making pork economically ?
Mine always costs me more than I cau buy
it for " There are several of these becrets
known to the initiated. You may stuff any
oi the land pikes wt:h any quantity of corn,
and he will not fatten. SufTuIks, Chester
Whites, or grades ot any pure breed, will
show their keeping. Second. Good hous
ing. A pig wants a nice, clean, dry pen to
sleep in. The yard may l ave muck and
plenty of litter for manure making, but the
pen. or sleeping apartment, should be warm
and well strawed. Third. Early fattening.
Pork is made more economically in warm
weather than col J. Fourth. A variety of
food. If cooked iudian meal is the staple,
let it be varied wiih greeu food while it lasts,
corn stalks, weeds, purslane, and clover,
and in winter feed enough cabbage and roots
to keep the bowels in good condition.
Fifth. Regular fcedlutr, three times a day.
A fattening pig should never squeal, and
he will not if he always fiuds his food read,)
at the regular time. Calculate to have
your pork worth no more aud perhaps a lit
tle less than the feed costs, and Ionic tor
all your profits in the grand heap of man
ure which the dying porker leaves as a leg
cy. These secrets make cheap pork in our
pen, even at the present pi ice of coi n.
American Agriculturist.
PARAFINE Wax. A correspondent, from
practical experience, recommends lard and
parafine wax as the base of ointments used
to dress running sores. It Ls staled that
bewax, the usual ingredient for giving
consistency to the ointment, is melted by
the heat of the body, and permits the hu
mors to be absorbed by the liueii bandages,
which, therefore, in drying adhere to the
wound and cause great pain. Trouble of
this kind, it is asserted, is entirely obviated
by the use of parafine wax. It may also be
mentioned here, that a mixture of from
one to three parts of coal tar with one hun
dred parts of fine plaster ot Paris, well rub
bed together and applied on lint, or used in
a cataplasm, has a healing effect upon sores,
and corrects the disagreeable odors from the
suppurating surface.
Potatoes. Plant in good soil ; if it be
rich, fresh manure will cause the crop to rot
more or less. If the soil be poor, a lack of
manure will often produce the same effect
by lick of vigoriu the plants to resist disease.
It is best to plant as soon as the soil is warm,
cutting the seed into pieces cf two or
three eyes and lttii:irtbem dry a little before
planting. Plant deep under liiht rtJ-ie.so
that the field may be harrowed. The sets
may be cut smaller later in the season.
Grass and CWer may be sown on any
land which is suitably prepared for thorn,
cpon winter or spring grain, on old sod bar
rowed well, or by themselves. It is better
to brush or bush in grass and clover seed
than to roll the land. The plan of sowing
a little white clover with grass-seed is advLs
able wherever an application of plaster will
not bring it in abundantly, as it generally
will on old land.
Fob Cuts. It is not generally known
that the leaves of the geranium are mi ex
cellent application for cuts, where the skin
is rubbed off, and other wounds of that kind.
One or two leaves must be bruised and
applied to the part, and the wound will be
cicatrized in a short time.
