It is generally thought in the country that tbe ashes of mioeral coal are not only useless M a-fertiliser and improver of the soil, bat that, on the contrary, they are hurtful. Hence, yon see that farmers reject these ashes, greatly to the detriment of agricul ture, while quantities- of them might he procured with no- other cost than that of gatherings them. It is, therefore, interestinr to report an experiment undertaken by a correspondent of the Journal de F Agriculture. He filled in the fall three flower pots with pure bitu minous coal ashes, without" mixture of any kind, and sowed in the first wheat, in the aeeond oats, aid n the third some straw berry seed. These Dots were buried in a bed in his garden and leftto themselves. The germination took place successfully daring the winter, and in March following the plants presented a fine appearance. In April, the wheat, oats, and strawberry plants ware in fine growth. Tbe whe?t and oats rrpene 1 perfectly ; the berries were large, clear, very well filled. and heavy, Tho wheat straw attained a height of more than fifty ftmr inches, that of the oats forty-three inches. . As to to the strawberry plants.they came on finely, and continued to grow well until October, when it became necessary to transplant them. Set out in open ground, hey are now the greenest and the strongest of all the seedlings. Thus it is seen, without the addition of either soil or manure, coal ashes were suffi cient in itself, according to this trial, to nourish and bring to maturity both wheat and oats, and to support the growth of straw berry plants during a year Coal ashes, from its nature, should effect a division of soils, and be very useful in overcoming the stiff ness of compact land; it would, then, at the same time, actas a manure and an improver. This moreover, should be the case, judg ing, not only by the experiment just de scribed, bat from analysis mado by several chemists, among others Davy, who found that the ashes contained, in proportions varying with the localities whence the coals sulphates of potasfa and L'me, carbonate of lime, clay and silica. The above experiments have been corob orsted, ro part, in my own experience. I have found it to- pay weir the trouble and ex pense of hauling coal a.hes a distance of four miles. The ashes should be screened before spreading upon the fields. The clink ers and cinders are of more service on roads on cultivated land. Stiff soils are benefitted more by coal ahes than any others. Their application tends to loosen them, which alone would make them more productive, if they did nothing else. On an acre-, sown with oats, I applied coal ashes, and the yield of grain was better and the straw much ranker than on any other part of the field. Thou eh it has generally been allegej that these ashes posses no fertilizing properties, experience, as well science, clearly proves it to be erroneous. They do possess enough to make it pay to gather them in large quanti ties. Especially are coal ashes in towns and cities valuable, because some proportion of wood is always consumed with coaL They can always be had for the t-ouble of hauling, and in the winter months the expense of doing so is not great, because teams then ' have little to do. TLey should he used for top dressing grass lands and meadows, and all olhnr soils that are tough and stiff. Ex. Farm Journal. . A lady correspondent informs us that she entirely destroyed the insects which infest ed her rce bushes by the use of quassia, and that they thrived better after its use than before ; In the report of the Alton III Horticultural Society quassia is rec commended for destroying black and green aphis in cherries. Quas.ia may be found in any druggist establishment. Use two ounc es to a gallon of water; boil fifteen or twen ty minutes. It will also be found effective in destroying many kinds of insects which infest the flower garden. American JTor ticulturUt. A correspondent of the "Prairie Farmer" writes: ,4I know of a farmer who thought himself a very careful man, who left his harrow in the, field, when his last seeding was done, all through the summer. When harvest came, his reaper was driven on to the harrow, and both broken so that it eost $30 to repair them all carelessness ! Far mers, buy a few rough boards, if you ran af ford nothing better, and put np a shed for the farm implements. .correspondent of the Germantown Tel erraph says that corn meal will make hens lay aa they never hud before. Hot, boiled, mashed potatoes is excellent food for this purpose in the winter season, as we have learned by experience this winter. The way the eggs come ia is interesting. The impression, somewhat prevalent, that oh corn is better for fattening stock thai) we matured portion has nothing ia nature to support it. dew the soil from moles and slugs, Prune the treea-keep off ha hng : Then fnnta Mi melons, rich and fair.
