Mas Pkowxed. We are informed that,
on Monday evening last, a raft struck a rock
at Spencer's dam, above Luiulr City, and
four of the men on the raft were thrown
into the water, and that Mr. Marion Maca-
dne, of Indiana, Pa., was drowned theoth
tr three having succeeded in getting to
shore. The deceased was about 18 years of
axe.

Ocr Streets. Frequently, within the
past three months, have we called the atten
tion of our Borough authorities the necessi
ty of improving oar streets at the earliest
practicable time. We are gratified to learn
that our suggestions have not been in vain
that the Town Council have asked for the
necessary legislation to enable them to ne
gotiate a loan for the purpose of macadam'
iaing the principle streets withiu the bor
ough limits. This being the case, we hope
that the work will be commenced as soon
as the money can be procured, and the sea
son will perm it. '
Something New. The old addage,
'"That every day brings something new,"
was illustrated in our town last week, by
the opening of a new and extensive Loot,
shoe, hat and cap store, by Messrs. J. C.
Lightcap & Son. This community has long
since felt the want of an establishment of
of the kind, and hence it is with pleasure
that we announce the opening of the Messrs."

house of Mr. William Dean, in Juniata tp.,
Huntingdon county, took fire between two
and three o'clock, on Wednesday morning,
March 24th, and made such rapid headway
that one of the daughters, Martha, aged
seventeen, was burned to death. Another
daughter, Kate, made a narrow escape but
was severely burned.
