But whether this is so or not, there can be no doubt that the ooly profitable way of farm ing is to rai?e large crops on such land as we cultivate. High farming gives us large crops and many of them. At present, while we have so much land in proportion to popula tion, we must, perhaps, be content with larare rmns of erain and f. w of tbi'in. We -- o 1 must adopt the slower but less expensive means of enriching our land from natural sources, rather than the quicker, more arti ficial means adopted by innny farmers in England, and by market gardeners, seed growers, and nurserymeu in this country. Labor is so high that we cannot afford to raise a small crop. If we sow but half the number of acres and double the yield, we should quadruple our profits. I have made up my mind to let the land He in clover for three years instead of two. This will lessen the number of acres under cultivation, and enable us to bestow more care in plowing and cleaning it. And the land will be rich er and produce better crop?. The atuio.- phere is capable of supplying a certain quan tity ot ammonia to the soil in rains and dews every year, and by giving the wheat crop a three years tsupply iustead of two years, we gain so much. Flatter the clover, top dress it in the fall, if you have the ma nure, and stimulate its growth in every way possible, and consume all the clover on the land or in the barn-yard. Do not sell a sin gle ton ; let not a weed grow, and the laud will certainly improve. The first object should be to destroy the weeds. I do tot know how it is in other sections, but with us the majority of farms are completely oven un with weeds. They are eating out the life of the land, and if something is not done to destroy thorn, eveu the present high prices cannot make farm ing profitable. A farmer the other day was contending that it did not pay to sum mer fallow. He has taken a run down farm, and a jear ago last spring, he had plowed up ten acres of a field, ard sowed it in bar ley and oats. The remainder of the field he summer fallowed, plowing it four limes, and harrowing thoroughly after each plowing. After the barley and oau were off, he plow ed the land once, harrowed it and sowed Mediterranean wheat. Ou the summer-fallow he drilled in Diehl wheat. He has just threshed and got 22 bushels per acre of the Mediterranean wheat after the spring crop, at one plowing, and 20 bushels per acre of Diehl wheat on the summer-fallow. Thi, he said, would not pay, as it cost him $20 per acre to summer-fallow, and he lost the use of the lana for one season. Now this may be true, and yet it is uo argument a gainst summer-fallowing. Wait a few years. Farming is slow work. Geddes remarked to me, when I told him I was trying to reu ovate a run down farm, "you will find it the work of your life." We ought not to expect a big crop on poor, run down land, simply plowing it three or four times in as many months. Time is required for the chemical changes to take place in the soil. But watch the effect on clover for the next two years, and when the laud is plowed again see if it is not in ar better condition than the part not summer fallowed. I should expect the clover on the summer fallow to be fully one third better in quantity and of letter quali ty than on the other part, and this extra quality of clover will make an extra quantity of good manure, (and there will be more clover roou in the land), and thus we have the means of going on and improving the farm. J. Harris. Valuable Hint. A correspondent of the New Hampshire Farmer says : "Re peated trials on as many different pieces of land, and each trial a complete success have convinced us thnt December, the time that we invariably cut brush, is the best season, as at that time the growth of the year is evidently at an end. A piece of valuable pasture land of ours, overrun with bushes which had been many times cut over in De cember, 1861, and at this time, a period of nearly seven years, not a bush has sprouted or started, and the land, though moist, is well stocked with grass." The ITenkry. Tho.-e not fully up to all the requirements of the "Heuery" should remember that if they desire a liberal crop ofeicgs in fpnng.the to Us must be fed with raw meat chopped fine, not less than twice a week. They should also have a constant , C 1 1 1 1 "i Kravci, B1M) ola mortar, lime or ground bones. They should be kept warm the house should have a southern expo sure, if possible, with window lights, to snut when necessary. i-oisoNoi-8 1'OTATOEP The sprouts of tne potato contain an alkaloid, termed by chemists solanine which is very poisonous if taken into the system. This does not ex ist in the tubers, nnless they are exposed to the light and air, which sometimes occurs from the accidental removal of the earth in cultivation. A potato that shows a blackish green tint on one side should never be cook ed for the table or fed to stock. Insects injurious to vegetation, it isstated, can be destroyed by application of a liquid composed of one part vinegar apd nino parts water. The mixture should be applied to vines and plants with a garden syriuge or waterpot with a fine noxsle. To Remove -'Pkocd Flesh." Pulver ixe loaf sugar very fine, and apply it to the part affected. This is a new and easy reme dy, and is said to remove it entirely, with out pain. It has been practiced in England for years. A Maine farmer, after many trials says he gets the mast milk, and the best butter when be feed his cows sweet corn, cut green and well cured in the shock.
