The Statistic of the Lutheran Church,
Prof. Stoever furnishes ns with the fol
lowing table or the statistics of the Luth
eran Chorch, in the January number ot the
Evangelical Review. We gave our 'readers
the aggregate number ot Lutherans in the
United States and Canada last week, and
now subjoin the deUtW, together with the
number of Lutherans in the world.

ulation of the world is estimated at thirteen
hundred millions of souls. Three hundred
and thirty-five millions of these are nomi
nally Christians. These are again divided
into one hundred and seventy millions Ko
man Catholic, eighty millions Protestants,
and seventy-six millions Greek Catholics. -Of
the eighty millions of Protestants in
the world, more than one-half art Luther
an. They are distributed very nearly as
follows ;

These statistics have been compiled from
different sources, but principally from the
tabular statements, furnhhed by C. F. Deit
terich, of Berlin, Director of the Statistical
Department.
Theee statistics show that the Lutheran
Church in the world is lamer than all the
Other Protestant Churches combined ; that
even in the United States she is numerical
ly the third denomination, numbering more
communicants than any other Church, except
the Methodist and Baptist; and rhat the
ratio of her increase in this country has
been very great. In 1S20, when the Gener
al Synod was formed, there were but 103
ministers in the Lutheran Church in the
United States ; in 1823, 175 ministers and
900 congregations ; in 1833, 337 ministers
and 1,017 congregations; in 1843, 430 min
isters and 1,371 congregations; in 1853, 900
mtniHters and l,7504congregations ; in 1863,
1,305 ministers and 2,487 congregation ; in
1869 more than 2.000 ministers, about 3,500
congregations, and nearly 400, 000 communi

A Mother's Wisdom.
The following letter of advice was written.
Bays the Concord People, to afriend of ours
by his mother. We recommend it to other
mother's sons, who are about striking out on
life's stormy billows. These are good max
ims, and we reccomuiend them to all. The
man who has a mother that can write anJ
feel as the author of this eviduutly does, is
fortunate indeed :
To Mr I)ear Son. The world estimates
men by their success in life, and by general
consent, permanent success is an evidence.of
superiority.
It will be safo for you to observe the fol
lowing rules, which your affectionate moth
er prays God will strengthen you to do:
1 Base all your actions upon a principle
of justice preserve your integrity of char
acter, and in doing it, never reckon the
cost.
'2 Never, under any circurostanocs,assume
a responsibility you can avoid consistently
with your duty to yourself, and others de
pendent on you. Or, in other words, mind
your own business.
3 Remember that-self interest is more
likely to warp your judgnent than all other
circumstances combined ; theref ore look well
to your duty, when your interest is concern
ed. 4 Never attempt to make money at the
expense of your reputation, or dishonor will
be the consequence.
5 Be neither lavish nor miserly ; of the
two avoid the latter. A mean man is uni
versally despised, therefore generous feel
ings should be cultivated.
5 Avoiu gambling of all kinds as a great
evil billiards, especially, because the most
facinuating, therefore the most dangerous.

aware.
7 Always let your expenses be such as to
leave a ballance in your pocket Ready mon
ey is always a friend in need.
8 Avoid borrowing and lending as far as
possible.
9 Liquor drinking, smoking cigars, and
chewing tobacco, are terrible habits to a
young man ; they impair the mind and
pocket, and lead to a waste. They tend to
lower a man, never elevate and lilt him up
n the regard of the virtuous and gojd.
10 Be not in the habit of relating your
nussortunes to others, and uever uiouru over
what you canuot prevent.
11 Let all see your good breeding, by
showing due respect to age. Have dignitj
and reverence enough of character never to
trifle with serious things respect religion
in others seek it as a treasure invaluable
let it be the foundation on which to build all
your structures, the possession of which will
insure happiness here, and an enduring in
heritance hereafter.
Singing A Blessing.
A correspondent of the Watchman and
Reflector, describing an English tea meet
ing says :
But the most curious thine to mo was to
hear the people, young and old, si no a bless
ing to the time of Old Hundred. Seen for
the first time, it was not only novel, but af
fecting. The blessing or grace was in these
words :
Be present at oar table. Lord,
Be her everywhere adored :
Then mercies bless, and grant that we
May feast ta Paradise with thee.
I can fancy that such words, sung by as
sembled hundreds, under the blue sky, at
some greenwood festival, minht stir in
the dullest heart some faint emotions of
thankfulness. Then, after the tables were
cleared at the call of the pastor they all stood
up again, and sang thanks as follows :

Let manna to onr touli be given
