The Economr of Extra Labor on Farms,
We have oa several occasions directed our
reader's attention to the great evil of Amer
ican agriculture too much land with too
little labor- Tnere is no greater mistake
than that it does not pay to hire ; yet we
hear this remark continually by really sensi
ble farmers. It does not pay no weil where
farmers have to board their hands. It is
too much for the women, with the modern
difficulty of getting female help. Bat far
mers must be satisfied that it will first pay
to have the men then, that it will pay to
build houses for them to live in.
We are pleased to see our agricultural co
temporaries touch on this vital question.
In the December number of that excellent
paper, the American Ayrtcnltrrist, there is
a very sensible editorial on the subject. In
the course of its argument it says:
"A thriving farmer, to whom we put the
question What kind ofespeu iiture pays
best in your operations? answereJ: 'Labor.
He ha 1 then in the field six men, and kept
them constantly at work for nine months in
the year. lie had but sixty acres of land,
yet the gross products were about fifteen
thousand dollars a year. A single item in
in this year's crop was six thousand bushels
of see 1 potatoes. His rough farm was rap
idly rounding into form under his plastic
touch. Old stone walls had been removed,
and the small fioljs opened into large ones.
Rocks had been blasted and sunk, and the
rough places made smooth. The wot pla
ces ha 1 bean male dry I y dejp drains. He
subsoiled, an 1 guar J :1 every crop aiiuinst
drought lie kept at work upon improve
ments, and ma lo the crops pay for them.
He said he rcirrettel nothing so much as
that he had not emploved more help. This
clear-headed firmer is unquestionably right.
Nothing pays so well as labor, even nt the
preseat high prices. Almost all farm pro
ducts have advanced more than labor in the
last eight years."
Our own experience confirms this. We
added to cur property last spring a contigu
ous tract of about thirty-five acres of rathe r
poor land, for which we had to buy about
six hundred dollars' worth of manure. For
this additional laud we have employed reg
ularly three extra hands. Whenever it has
beeu too wee to work at other matters, the
hands have been set to work to clearing
ditches, digging sod from the swamp, or
gathering old vegetable matter anywhere;
and with some manure from the barnyard,
lime and salt, mixing the whole together.
We keep a simple farm account against all
the principal farm crops and occupations,
and find this heap of compost has cot,t us
about three hundred dollars. The immense
heap is certainly worth much more than
double this sum. We thus make a profit
of one hundred per cent, on the meu by this
manure matter alone, besides having the
men on hand in strong force to "put through"
a job just at the very moment when it ought
to bo done. The profit on this alone is of
ten so great, that it will almost pay to have
the men at hand to do nothing : so that the
mx huudred dollars of mauure is nearly clear
gain. 1'res.
Ploughing up Eaw Soil.
We sometimes hear farmers remark, that
ploughing deep, they get less grain; that
bringing up the new yellow soil, their crops
uffer. It would be strante if this were not
the case ; for this soil, even if mellow, is
raw, jut like manure when it is "green,"
or "lonir." It is not yet converted or chan
ged into plant food. It needs just what the
long manure needs to be changed by the
heat and tho air that is, decomposed or
rotten.
When the top soil is less fertile than it
used to be when the land was first tilled, vou
may rest assured that this under is always
better than the upper soil, because the up
per has deitorated.whi!e the under has not,
but rather improved.
It is, therefore, unadvisable, nav, suldi
cal in some soils, to turn up deeply the un-
derg. onnd in the spring or in the fall t sow
ing time. The cold, cheerless ground will
not help the grain, ami were it not for the
other soil mixed with it, an almost total fail
ure would be the result.
But turn it up in the Tall, and let the frost
and the elements take hold of it, and you
-.il i i ... . .
win nave anotner ou ; it is turned into
manure, a ood part of it. A little lime
mixed with it, scattered, and harrowed in,
or manure, or both, would facilitate tho pro
cess. In the siring sow, cither wiih or
without another ploughing, and yon will
fin! no more thSMsion to complain. We have
Kreat fertility to draw upon from below, but
it requires managing. Ectuinrj lust.
The following recipe is claimed to be an
unfailing remedy, and has been tried with
success in two instances where soldiers were
bitten by rattle.suakas on the plains. Rib

Bromine 5 drachms. Ten drops of this mix
ture diluted with a tal-Iespoonful or two of
brandy, or wine, or whisky, constitute a
dose, to be repeated if necessary. It must
be kept in glass-storperod vials, well secu
red, as the air will affect it. This is an in
valuable remedy.
Keep a Wrench and Use It. Those
who wish to keep their wagon and carria
ges in good order, should place a wrench on
every nut at least once a month. This wi I
save nuts, save bolts and prevent rattling
and wear and tear. There is a great deal
depending upon looking after the running
gear of vehicles as well as the harness For
want of a little attention accidents have
happened and damage been sustained.
