Ground Hoc Dat. We neglected to
state last week, that Tuesday, February 2d
(ground hog day) was clondy in this region,
and bence "Mr. Piggy" was unable to see
his shadow, if he came out of his burrow.
According to tradition, this would indicate
that winter was about over and Spring near
at hand. We hope this may prove true,
but so far the indications are rather probla

A Good Maxim. "Aim at perfection in
everything, though in most things it is un
attained ; however, they who aim at it, and
1 persevere, will come much nearer to it than
those whose luioess and despondency make
them jrive it up as unattainable." The
above is particularly applicable to the sub
ject of health all should do everything in
their power to attain perfection, as near as
gossible in that This can be secured by a
regular and continued use of Zingari Bitters.
Self Inflicted Injury. We should be
lost without Webster's new Illustrated Dic
tionary. There is no work that can at all
compare with it, and the student who fails
to get a Webster can have no idea of the
low he inflict vpoa himself. Here, knowl

the reach of all, and we hope the time will
soon come when every family will obtain
tfiis work. With its numerous pictures and
explanations it is like a fairy tale for the
children. Christian Monitor. For sale by

St. Valentine's Dat. This day, which
causes so much fluttering among the young
ladies, comes on Sunday this year, February
14th. For the benefit of our fair friends,
we would state that the custom of sending
" alentines'' originated many hundred
years ago. St Valentine was, according to
some writers, a bishop, while others insist
that he was a prexbyter, who was beheaded
at Rome, in the reign of the Emperor Claud
ius, A. D., 270. Historians remark that "he
s a man of admirable parts, and so fa
Taous for his love and charity that the cus
toraof choosinjr Valentines upon his festi
val took its rise from thence."
Santid Bitter. Wc copy the following
an exchange, which, as rancid butter
is generally in the ascendant here, jnay be
worth at least a trial: "To a pint of water
M thirty drops (about half a teajpooful)
of liquid chloride of lime. Wash in this
two and a half pounds of rancid butter.
When every particle of the butter has come
in contact with the water, let it stand an
nonrortwo; then wash it well in pure wa
ter. He butter is left without anv odor.
and baa the sweetness of fresh butter. These
preparations of lime have nothing injurious
'"them." The editor then adds: "We
forthwith obtained some of the most rancid
tatter, and bad enough for any stomach that
bad no more sensibility than a wagon wheel.
" e doctored it as per recipe, and when
Plwed on the table along with new, good
b"ter, ery able judges could not distinguish
which was the new butter. Here is a fact
worth a year's subscription to a paper."
Barrett's Hair Restorative. With
P-easnre we read your commendatory article
published a short time since, respecting the
Popular and almost indispensable prepara
tion now so widely kuown as "Barrett's Veg
gie flair Restorative." Having used
this preparation ever since its discovery, we
tee! more than an ordinary interest in its suo
and are pleased to lea; n that it is gen
erally used and appreciated throughout the
nt're country. Unlike most of the dirty,
patty nostrums put up and sold as
"air Restoratives and Dressings, this com
mand not only completely restores the hair
to "a original color, but surpasses all others
many important poihU. Nothing but
"' conld ever have given this preparation
reputation it now enjoys. Mr. Barrett
native of New Hampshire, and well
"own as being the original discoverer and
manufacturer of the "Vegetable Hair Res
torative," all others put up in a similar
banner being worthless imitations, and the
Public should exercise great care how' they
tamper with them. Improvements in cap
1 kry adornments in this age of vanity and
Pride have become of as much codsidera
on and importance as the discovery of any
w science or mechanical invention. We
re steady admirers of distinguished invent
or, and hope that -Barrett a Vegetable
Hair Restorative" may triumphantly spread
m Ume' ,nd merit meet with its reward.
