Almost every farmer 'in the country might raise from half a ton to a ton every season about a3 well as not. The children, in some instan ces, with a little encouragement from their parents and guardians, could man age hens and chickens until they are large enough to take care of themselves. It will not cost near as much time, grain and expense in every other re spect to produce a ton of poultry as to make a ton of beef or mutton, when such meat is produced by feeding much grain. It i i usually more eco nomical to raise gallinaceous fowls than ducks, turkeys, or geese, as ducklings and turkeys are sometimes exceedingly tender. But chickens can usually be produced with little care and at a tri fling expense. But whatever may be the kind of poultry raised, in order to meet with satisfactory success, it is better to com mence in autumn or the fore part of winter. All kinds of fowls require protection from the rigers of our Nor thern winters, as protection from in tense cold during winter is absolutely essential to the prolificacy of all fowls. When the turkeys arc accustomed to roost in trees or anywhere in the open air, they suffer so intensely during the coldest days and nights that they can not commence laying until late in the Spring. And even when they do be gin to lay, they produce only a few eggs. But if comfortable quarters were provided for fowls of all kinds so that they do not nearly perish before Spring, every hen would produces doub le the number of eggs with no more feed. When comfortable houses are provided for poultry, and they are sup plied with a sufficient amount of nutri tious feed to keep them in fair condi tion, as soon as the warm weather re turns every hen will produce one egg a day for a long time. Repository. How to Boil Potatoes. The discussion took a culinary turn, touching the proper method of cooking potatoes for the table. It was stated that as soon as potatoes have been boil ed until they are nearly soft, the water should be poured out of the kettle, and the potatoes allowed to cook a few min utes in a. heated kettle without hot wa ter. By this mode of cooking, the po tatoes will be very mealy and much more palatable than if allowed to re main in the boiling water after they are boiled soft. To facilitate the operation of removing the hot water from the po tatoes, some one (whose name was not announced,) showed a kettle having three ears riveted to the side at the top j for the purpose of holding the tin lid in its place while the hot water is being poured out. There were several small holes punched in the tin lid, thro' which the boiling water issues, when the kettle or pot is turned upon its side the ears preventing the cover fronvf ail ing off. On one side of the pot there was also a lug, or car with a hole in it, for receiving a hook, for the purpose of enabling the cook to handle the pot of boiling potatoes, or turnips, without any danger of scalding or burning one's hands. A notch is made in one side of the lid, so that it will pass be neath one of the ears, when a slight turn of the cover to the right, or to the left, will secure it in the desired place. X. Y. Farmers' Club. Camphor Cerate. Take one and a half ounces of spermaceti, half an ounce of white wax, and scrape into a little earthen pot ; add six drachms of powdered camphor, and pour on the whole four tablespoonfuls of the best olive oil. riace in a small tin pan of boiling water ; when dissolved, stir it well. In ten minutes pour off into jars, or let it stand in the one it was melted in. Rubbed into the lips at night it prevents all cracking; it also whitens the hands and keeps them smooth. Gcisea Fowls Profit. These fowls, when a number of hens are to gether, it is said, will all lay their eggs in one place till the instinct of setting begins to operate, when each will make a nest, or sometimes two will club to gether in laying and setting. When the chicks come out they must have a free run, as confinement is fatal to the brood. The Guinea is a prolific laver mm, SV J but her noise is sometimes rather an noying. Working horses, when in the stable, are better without a blanket than with it. When driven hard and standing out the blanket should be used. Flax seed oceasionly given to horses or cattle, will make them shed their old hair and whether old or younp, soon gt- vf d fat- 11 tbe aly thing which wdl fatten some old horses. So says an exchange.
