Hints to Trait Growers.
The Gardner's Monthly contains a
query from one of its readers, as fol
lows : U there any way to prevent ap
ple blossoms being destroyed by early
spring frosts?" to vliicli tbe editor of
the Monthly makes this reply :
"Plant late blooming varieties is the
sorest remedy. In this vicinity,
R&ule's Jannet often bears when oth
ers do not, because its late flowers es
cape." The evil for which a remedy is ask
ed is a very wide-spread one, and if
there is any remedy, whoever discovers
it will be a great benefactor to the fruit
growing public. We have had in our
mind for many years a remedy, which,
it seems to us, will prove efficacious. It
was suggested by the following facts:
Many years ago a very severe frost oc
curred on the night of June 4th, kill
ing the wheat, corn and fruit over a
large extent of our Western country.
On that night, in an orchard, a cow
happened to be lying under a large ap
ple tree. The fruit on that tree was
saved, while on all the others in the
orchard it was killed. The warmth
from the cow's body and breath, rising
into the tree and spreading among the
leaves and branches, kept the tempera
ture elevated above the freezing point.
A hog lying under a pear tree saved
the fruit on it. Now from these facts
we draw this conclusion: The heat
generated from this cow was not more
than would be generated in open air by
the burning of a few pounds of hay, or
a small "amount of grain. The only
point is, to so plan it that the heat shall
' be formed in the right quantity and
distributed evenly during the night. A
little experimenting showed that this
could be best accomplished by placing
under each tree at the time required
burning kerosene lamps, boxed up so
as to be safe from wind or accident.
We give the hint, hoping that it will
be tested thoroughly.
Examine tour Octhouses. Every
farmer should so arrange his work that
he can spare time enough once a week
. to go all through his barns and outbuild
ings, and see if anything is out of
order. The best time 13 at the begin
ning of the week, for then he has no
unfinished jobs on hand that must be
completed before the Sabbath. In one
place he will find a door with a broken
hinge; in another a sleigh standing on
damp earth ; and again he will find a
tub with a hoop falling off, etc. ''It
will take much time ?" Then take it
it will be the best spent hour, or half
day, if necessary, that the owner
spends.
Cure for. Chapped Hands. Take
three drachms of gum camphor, three
drachms of white beeswax, three of
spermaceti, and three tablespoons of
olive oil. Melt in a cup npon the stove,
slowly, stirring it carefully; and iv a
few minutes it will form a nice white
ointment. If the hands are very bad,
take an old pair of gloves, sew up all
the rips, turn inside out, and rub all
over with the ointment, then turn back
and wear them every night. This makes
the hands beautifully white and soft
and prevents all chapping.
Beef, Dried. Take one pound of
chipped beef4 pour cold water over it
in a frying pan, parboil it for five min
utes, then drain the water from the beef,
place it on the fire, add a large lump
of butter and dredge flour until cover
ed; then pour on a pint of rich milk,
stirring with a spoon until it thickens ;
bring to the table hot.
Pumps. Pumps exposed to freezing
are now usually made with contrivan
ces to let off the water one mode be
ing to make a email hole in the pipe a
few feet below the exposed part, so
that the water will always run off be
fore freezing. This hole may be stop
ped at other times of the year.
Oysters, Fried. Have a hot grid
dle, cover it with butter, have a dish of
. grated crackers, dip the oysters in the
crackers one by one and place them
singly on the griddle, fry until brown
on both sides aud serve while hot. Many
prefer them cooked in tliis
way to any
other.
To Cook Tcrxips. Take a slice off
the top end and cut off the tap root
close, leaving the other part of the
paring on. It boils soft, is short "rain
ed, and helps the flavor of the turnips.
Suel Foster says a whitwash of lime
and tobacco will protect trees from rab
bits; and a small amount of earth is
an effectual barricade against mice.
Practical analysis, in one instance,
showed that the last cup of milk from
a cow's udder contains sixteen times as
much cream as the first cup.
When chickens roost above the mow
It spoils the hay for horse or cow. '
