Mending Bag. Carpet.
Mrs. H. M. of Columbia co.,Pa.,
sends a number of suggestion? in mut
ters relating to economy in the house
hold, of which we at present give the
following: "One morning lust winter
as Henry took some hot coals out of the
sittina-room stove to start a fire in the
kitchen, he dropped nearly half of t.ieaJ
on my new rag carpet, and burned sev-,
en or eight holes from one to two inches J
in diameter. At first I did not know
what to do, but soon made up my mind
to try and mend them, and I think I
succeeded admirably, for when they
were done they could not be seen half
way across the room, and they never
would be noticed by any person unless
his attention was called to it. I first
cat both rags and warp out as far as
they were the least bit tender with the
heat, then went to the rng drawer and
selected rags as near the color of those
as possible, and carefully joined every
rag burned with one of its own size and
color. I was lucky enough to have yarn
like the warp, for I made the carpet
myself. Then I served the warp the
same way, weaving it in the rags with
a darning needle. It is rather difficult
getting the warp just right, unless you
know how. Begin by putting in every
alternate thread; this brings them all
over and under the same rags, the first
going over. Then commence and put
in those skipped, taking every other one
left the first time over, and so on until
all are in. It is better to pull some of
the warp out a little farther than it was
burned, so that the knots may not all
come in one place. This is easier done
while the carpet is tacked on the floor
than at any other time. It will be
found rather trying at first, but all that
is necessary to accomplish it satisfact
rilyis a little patience and perseverance.
Where there are many holes it is better
not to try to mend more than one or
two at a time. But I think it decided
ly pays on a new carpet. Whether it
will on an old one each one must judge
for herself after she has tried it."
A Eeal Charm.
As a rule we discountenance the use
of "charms," either to avert or remedv
evils; but here is one we can recom
mend. A young English farmer found
his means seriously reduced, lie con
sulted a friend, who gr.ivelv said : "1
' O er
know of a charm that will cure all that.
Take this little cup; drink from it every
morning of tha water you must gel at
such a spring. But remember, you
must draw it yourself at five oclock,or
the charnvwill be broken."
Next morning the farmer "proceeded
across his fields, for the spring was at
the farther end of the estate, and spy
ing a neighbor's cows, which hs-.d
ken through the fence and were feeding
on his pasture, he turned them out and
had the fence mended. But the labor
ers were not at hand; they camo loi
tering in after the proper time, and
were startled at seeing "master" so
early. "Oh," said he, "I see how this
is; it comes of my not getting up in
time." This early rising soon became
a pleasant habit, and his example was
followed by the rest of the people about
the farm. Things soon took a differ
ent turn, so that when, at the close of
the year, with a laughing face, he thank
ed his friend for the "charm" he felt
that the plan suggested was as effica
cious as it was simple.
FATTEXlxa Cattle. Fattening an
imals of all kinds lay on flesh very rap
idly as the weather grows cooler. Keep
beeves and sheep in pasture as long as
the feed is good, but yard them at night,
and feed twiee a day with grain, if they
are to be marketed soon; otherwise
simply feed so as to be sure they are
constantly gaining. Pigs should have
cooked food and plenty of it. Tush
forward their fattening as rapidiv as
possible, for at no season will thev sain
faster. Keep them clean ami give them
warm sheltered nests. Foultrv also
gain very rapidly, and it is best to fat
ten them on scalded meal, with corn,
wheat screenings and other food in ad
dition, at daylight in the morning and
late in the afternoon.
. Four turkeys were cooped up and fed
with meal, boiled potatoes and oats:
four others of the same brood were
treated in a similar manner in another
pen, but with a pint daily of fine pul
verized charcoal added to the foo Land
an abundant supply of the coal. AH
eight were killed the same day, ar.d
those fed with the charcoal were found
to weigh a pound and a half more than
theothers, and to be of a better quality.
To take rust out of steel, rub well
with sweet oil, and let the oil remain
upon them for forty-eight hours. Then
rub with leather sprinkled with unpack
ed lime, finely powdered until all the
rust disappears.
