1 i. i' i -. i it : .' i -: : ar the farmer. The Toot of a Horse The Auburn News, of recent date con tained a communication from R. C. Tarra gon, mechauim of the foot of a horse. He says: 'The external covering of the ftH' is divided into fonrparts, namely: the walls, bars, sole and frog. The external or wail serves to defend the sensitive tissues within the wall or hoof and is composed of smal! filaments or hollow lubes, consolidated in mich a manner as to preserve the canals dS tinct. These canals constitute the excrc meotioo. outlets cf the hoof, from which morbid material finds an outlet, and in these are found vessels by which horn is secreted or produced. The bars are a cot.tinuation of the external wall just desribed ; they form an angle at the heels, which terminates towards the toe; they thus serve to give strength and durability to the hoof, and also to prevent contraction at the heels. When these bars are cut away or demol ished by means of the buttress then the foot often goes to rack and ruin. The soul is much more elastic than the crust, and is a medium of the sensitive faculty, through which, together with its power of elasticity the percussion of the foot against the ground is regulated. The frog is much mire elas tic than either of the parts just described, and any unnecessary paring thereof is a mon strous evil. On the internal posterior of the aboved named parts we find a set of beautiful leaves, resembling those found in (he under surface of a mushroom. Their number is five hundred. These articulate with 2. like number given off from the sensi tives tissues of the foot proper, each leaf having two sides and an edjie, and form a series of articulations DumLering three thou sand. The whole snrface of these articula tions measures four square feet, hence the horse having four feet, his body rests on sixteen square feet of surface, all contained within his hoofs.'' Bran fob Milk Cows. Plain bran or ahipstnff, is one of the very best kinds of food to increase milk. Why, we do not know. It is not fattening. A steer could not be fattened on bran alone, and a cow, if fed on the best of hay and bran alone, might fall off in her yield, unless her strength and condition were kept op by Indian meal or Other strong food. If there is anything in which there would seetu to be no strength, it is bran the mere hull of wheat. It is not stimulating, like brewer's grain, and can certainly do no barm, if it docs no good ; and yet any farmer who will make the ex periment will find at least we have found that a cow being otherwise kept in proper condition, her yield of milk will be very considerably increased by giving her, twice a day, a feed of pure bran. The fact is patent, although we are not able toexplain it If there is ary one article, which, while keeping up the health and strength of the cow, will also increase the supply of rich, healthy milk, in our experience it is cotton- seed cake meal. We have found this to have a great effect on the milk secreting or gans. The cows, at first, do not seem to relish it, and it should be mixed with some other feed, but they soon cotue to like it, andwe have never seen any bad effects in any way. The Virtues of Borax. The washer woman of Holland and Belgium, so prover bially clean, and who get up their linens so beautiful white, use refined borax as wash ing powder, instead of soda, in the propor tion of a large handful of borax powder to about ten gallons of boiling water : they save in soap nearly half. All the large washing establishments adopt the ex act same mode. For laces, cambrics, &c. , an extra quantity of powder is used, and for crinolines, (requiring to be male stiff,) a strong solution is necessary. Borax being a neutral salt, does not in the slightest in jure the texture of the linen ; its effect is to soften the hardest water, therefore it should be kept on the toilet table. To tha taste it is rather sweet, is used forcleaning the hair is an excellent dentrific, and in hot countries is used in combination with tartaric acid and bi carbonate of soda as a cooling beverage. For a young man who is thoroughly in earnest, farming offers a grand field for ef fort ; but the man who is only half in ear nest, who thinks that costly barns, and im ported stock, and a nicely rolled lawn are the great objects of attainments, may accom plish pretty results, but they will be very small ones. A correspondent of the Journal of Aeri cultural "says he finds his clay loam ground increased more in productiveness by the use of eight bushels of salt to one bushel of plas ter to the acre, than from the application of animal manure. Others have been equally benefited by the application. Setting hens can be cured by putting wa ter in a vessel to the depth of one inch. nut ting the hen into it, and covering the top of iue vessel lor about twenty-four hours. The vessel should be deep enough to allow the fowl to stand up. This is the best remedy I have ever tried.
