Walking Horses. -
The best gait a horse ever had for
every day use is a good walk. It is a
gait that not one in ten possesses.
Colta are not trained to walk in all the
Eastern States. Young America wants
more speed. Kentucky has more good
walking horses than any other State,
for there horseback traveling has long
been in fashion for men and women,
over a country where muddy roads, at
times, render any other git impossible,
and so horses have been bred for the
saddle and trained to a walking gait.
This is also the case in all the western
States, and perhaps might have been
so in New England when our grand
mothers rode to meeting on a pillion
behind our grandfathers. But one
horae wagons have put horseback rid
ing out of fashion, and now a- good
walking horse is more rare than one
that can trot a mile in 2:40.
At the Springfield (Mass.) Horse
Show of 18G0, the writer was one of
the committee to award prizes to the
best walking horses. Out of seventeen
entered, the committee found but one
which was considered a first rate walk
er. This was a Morrill mare, which
walked five miles an hour with ease.
Two others were fair walkers, and the
rest knew no gait that could be called
walking. At the New York State Fair
the same state of facts was again de
veloped. A letter from Wisconsin say3 :
"I think horses trained to walk fast
would be a greater benefit to our far
mers in general than fast trotters, as
almost all their work has to be done
with a walk."
I once knew a man in Massachusetts
who, before the railroads were built,
kept from two to four teams at work
on the road, and never allowed them to
trot at all, and made the distance in
quicker time than his neighbors, who
made their horses trot at every conven
ient place. He said that when a horse
commenced to walk after a trot, he
walked much slower than his usual
gate, if kept on a walk, and thereby
lost more than he gained. Will far

The Hog. The hog, which is real
ly the most helpless of animals, is
blamed for being an uncleanlv beast
but our word for it, he looks as tidv as
he can under his disadvantages. Manv
farmers devote more time, in a single
day, to keeping a pair of horses clean,
than they give to a dozen hogs during
their lives. The horse is placed in a
clean 6table, is curried and brushed
every morning, and has a new bed to
rest on every night. Not so with the
hog; he is often shut up in a tight pen,
with less room than is allowed culprits
in a dungeon, and compelled to staud
and lie on his accumulated filth. Give
the horse or cow no better advantages,
and will they present a more cleanly
appearance? Put your pet horse or
your choice cow in your hog yard one
night, and where is their sleekness
then? They will look even worse than
the hog. We have tried it, and have
never known a hog to decline a well
made up bed of clean oat straw. On
the contrary, they will busy themselves
in arranging it to protect them both
from the dirt and cold.
Short Rule to Measure Grain.
An exchange says: It is convenient to
farmers and croppers to have an easv
and correct rule by which to measure
corn in cribs. Here is one havir.f
leveled the corn in the crib, measure
the length, breadth and depth, and
multiply them together, and deduct
from the product one-fifth ; and you
have the number of bushels in the ear
for shelled corn take one-half of this.
To be strictly correct add half a bush
el for every one hundred. Fanners
who are fond of cyphering can test the
correctness of this rule by taking 1,728
solid inches for a foot, and 2,150 iuch
es ia a bushel, and see that the latter
is nearly one-fifth larger than the for
mer. Fattening Calves. A sensible
practical farmer says that he has notic
ed that calves would thrive better on
poor than on rich milk. The nutritive
elements of milk reside chiefly in the
caseine. If you have a cow that gives
very rich milk, and one that gives a
quality poorer in butter it is better in
every way to feed the calf on the milk
of the latter. The calf will thrive bet
ter.and you will get more butter from
the milk of the first cow.
Somebody has denominated Indian
corn the great farmlever. Itiscertain
ly a useful product,but not quite so good
xor preaa as wheat, toa Northern palate.
Pack winter apples in dry sand placed
ma cellar; they will keep plump and
freehand rot little.
