How to Preserve Fruit Trees from the
Mice.
Thousands of young trees are de
Btroyed annually by those little pestif
erous Bcamps. They seldom fail to
give me their compliments, ami in such
a manner, to, as too nettle my temper
just a little. I h:ve wrapped my trees
with paper and twine, ploughed the
ground late in autumn, and cleaned
the grass carefully away from around
the trees; yet those little, thieves steal
into my orchard and garden, and very
cooly girdle my choicest trees. I put
my wits to work to devise some sure
remedy that would he cheap and quick
ly done. Take equal parts pine tar
and fish oil, mix together throughh
by warming, then takea brush and put
on the trees close to the ground and
twelve or fifteen inches up around the
body. It will not injure the trees,and
there will be no more trouble with mice.
I tried the experience on fifty trees last
winter, and it worked like a charm.
My trees were never more thrifty than
during the present season. Dr. JY7tfi

To Make Cows Give Milk. A
writer who says his cows give all the
milk he wanted in a family of eight
persons, and from which was made
two hundred ami sixty pounds of but
ter the year, gives the following as his
treatment, lie says.-
"If you desire to get a large yield
of milk, give your cows three times a
dav water slightly warmed, in which
bran has been stirred at the rate of one
quart to the two gallons of water. You
will find, if you have not found before,
that by this d.iily practice that your
cow will gain twenty-five per ent, im
mediately under the effects of it, and
she will become so attached to the di
et as to refuse to drink clear water un
less very thirsty, but thisshe will drirk
almost any time, and ask for more. Th'
amount of this drink is an ordinary
pail full each time, morning, noon, and
night. Your animal will then do her
best at discounting the lacteal. Fou
hundred pounds of butter are often ob
tained from good stock, and instances
are mentioned where the yield was ev
en at a higher figure.
To Picklk Beet Roots. This veg
etable makes an excellent pickle, and
from the brightness of its color has a
very pretty effect in a glass pickle dish
or jar. Wash the beet perfectly ; do
not cut off any of the fibrous roots, as
this would allow the juice to escape,
' and thus the coloring would be lost.
Put into sufficient water to boil it, and
when the skin will come off it will be
sufficiently cooked, and may be taken
out and laid upon a cloth to cool. Hav
ing rubbed off the skin, cut the beet in
to a jar, anil pour over it cold vinegar,
with an ounce of whole black pepper,
and equal weight of dry ginger, and
let it stand until quite cold. The jar
should be kept closely corked.
An orchard in Massachusetts which
has been used as a hog pasture for
twenty years, has never failed to pro
duce a fine crop of fruit. A worm-eat-n
apple u a rarity in that orchard.
