The excellency of buckwheat flour de
pends chief on the management of the
Sraia between the time of ripening and
grinding-- The common way of treating
buckwheat effrttaally prevents making good
floor, it beta allowed to remain in the swath
for awrersj weeks, when La should not be
suffered to lie longer than a day or two and
it is deodedly better for the grain to rake it
and tet it OA cod, as fast a it is cradled.
Much iea grain will be wasted by shelling
out ; the straw will cure and dry out sooner,
and make better fodder ; the crop will be
read far threshing or housing in less tine ;
and the grain, will yield a much better qual
ity of flour. It is especially injurious to
the grain to be exposed to storms before it
is set Bp, for dirt is spattered all 'over the
grain, by the falling of large rain-drops-This
makes the flour dark colored and grit
ty. Wetting and drying the grain several
times, destroys the "life" of the flour. It
will never be as white, nor make as good
cakes, bat will be sticky, and the cakes
clammy, like the flour of sprouted wheat.
Cleansing Casks, Bottles, Etc.
The inquiry is often made of us by farm
ers, brewers, beef and pork packers, etc.,
regarding the best met hod of deodorizing
and cleansing old cider and beer barrel,
musty cans, bottles, etc. Chemistry fur
nibhes an agent in the permanganate of po
tass which fully meets this want. A pint
of the permanganate turned into the mo.st
musty, filthy cider or beer ea--k and rinsed
about a few moments, will entirely decom
pose all fungoid growths and fermenting
matter, and render the cask as sweet as those
that are new. The deodorizing, disinfect
ing power of the permanganate, holdiug as
it does five equivelants of oxygen, is won
derful ; it will even deodorize carbolic acid.
The only way to remove immediately the
odor of carbolio a?id from the hands, is to
immerse them in the liquid permanganate.

Powls in the Horse Stable.
Fowls should never be permitted to have
access to the horse stable, nor the feed room
and haymow. Their root should be entire
ly separate from the stable.so that they may
not always be ready to slip iu whenever the
door is opened, and that vermin, which in
fest poultry, may not reach the horses and
cattle. It is a well-known fact that fowls of
all kinds frequently drop a very sordid, of
fensive, clammy, and viscious odor, and
when allowed to go on the haymow, or in
the feeding room, or anywhere in the barn.

to suppose. Some horse are always afraid
of fowls, and when one enters the manner,
or rack, the timid horse will immediately
surrender the whole right, however huugry
he may be, to these lawless intruders.

has been discovered by which a beautiful
show of evergreens may be obtained for the
parlor during the winter. We give it for
the benefit of our lady readers, who aie in
separably associated in our mind with flow
ers, and all the beautiful objects on earth :
"If geranium branches, taken from luxuri
ant and healthy trees, just before winter
sets iD,be cut as slips and immersed in soap
water, they will, after drooping a few days,
shed their leaves and put forth fresh ones,
and continue in the fin.'st vigor all winter.
By placing a number of bottles thus filled
in a flower basket, with most, to conceal the
bottles, a show of evergreen is easily secur
ed for the winter. All the different varie
ties of the plant being used, the various
shapes and color of the leaves blend iuto a
beautiful effect. They require uo fresh wa
ter." The plan is simple, easily put into
practice, and is said to be successful.
DRT PlCKLE FOR BkEP. If you would
have the nicest pickle for beet, or other
corned meats, please accept the following
prescription: For 100 lbs. take 4 quarts of
rock salt finely pulverized, 4 lbs. clean fine
sugar, 4 ounces saltpeter, pulverized. Mix
the whole together, without a drop of wa
ter, and then take your beef, piece, and
rub the mixture well into all of its folds and
interstices, packing it down as you proceed,
in a sweet, dry tub or barrel. When all the
pieces are thus treated and racked down.

the juices of the meat will dissolve the in
gredients, and make pickle enough to cover
it. Ihe meat, in this case, retains all
sweetness, not adulterated or hardoued
water.
Coal a.hes are said to be improved by
covering up in every cart load of ashes,
one bushel of hme in its hottest state for
about ten or twelve hours, when the lime
will be entirely slaked. The whole is then
to be well mixed together and turned over
two or three times, vhen the cinders or
half burned pieces of coal, which wnuld
otherwise be of no use, will be reduced to as
fine a powder as the lima itself. The ashes
should bo kept perfectly dry.
In England there are many farmers who
more than support themselves and large
families on the product of six acres, besides
paying heavy rents. Agriculturists iu Ger
many who are proprietors of five acres,sup
port themselves on two, and lay up money
on the productions of the remainder.
It is a bad practice to leave young cattle
and colts to take their chances among older
cattle. The older ones will get the best
. picking, while they need least. They will
select the best shelter and warmest beds for
themselves, and leave the little ones to take
the chances that are left.
Working horses should be stabled during
storms and cool, frosty nights. Horses are
often lamed by running in the pasture to
keep warm, and frost-bitten grass is not very
prolific in strength and endurance.
A Strawberry grower in Pennsylvania has
eome to the conclusion that the ground us
ually devoted to this fruit is made too rich
for profitable production of it.
