Gen. Jacob M. Campbell, Eepnblicw Candi
date for Surveyor General.
Gen. Campbell was bora in Allegheny t'p,
Somerset co., Fa., on tbeSrth i of November
1821 ; coii-iu'-ntH-. bs will bs 4 years old
next November. At an early age be was
apprenticed to the printing business.in Som
erset, Pa- After mastering the art be etui
grated to Pittsburg, where he "worked at
case" for some time. He next found his
way to New Orleans and into another print
ing ofioe. Tired of tha "com posing stick
and rule," he tried his hand at stearu boating,
first as a deck hand. and tbon as clerk. mate,
and part owner of a vessel. In l.:47, we
find him in the iron business at, Brady's
Bend. In he followed the tide of em
igration to California, remaining there tut a
fchort time. In I sS3 wa find him t Johns
town, Pa., assisting in the construction ot
the mammoth Cambria !" " orks, with
which establishment he w connected up to
the breaking out of the war. In 161 hewas
among the first to enroll himself as a volun
teer, to defend the flag of his country, and
belonged to the first company that entered
Caujp Cnrtin. Upon the arrival of the
cr.mpany in Harrisburg, and the organiza
tion ol the 3rd Regiment P.V.,to which his
company was attached, Lieut. Campbell was
ai'i-ointed Quartermaster of the Regiment,
which position he filled with credit to him
self and to the satisfaction of the officers and
men of his lteeiment, as all those who re
main will testify. lie was mu-tered out cf
service on the 2th of Jnly, 1S61, and on the
SOth of the same month was commissioned
by Gov. Curtin to raise a Regiment. The
Reeiment was recruited mainly through Col.
Campbell's individual exertions, and upon
Ix-ing organized, was designated the 54th.
His regiment wasthe escort of honor through
the City of Wa-hineton. to the remains of
the lamented Colonel Cameron (in-other ot
Hon. Simon Cameron.) who fell at the first
Bull Bun battle.
On the 2'.th of March, 1002, CoL Camp-
111 was ordered to occupy the line of the
Baltimorexind Ohio railroad, from North
Mountain station. 56 miles westward to the
South Branch of the Potomac. In that posi
tion the executive as well as the military abu
ities of the Col. were constantly called into
reiui.-ition. How well lie performed his ar
duous and multitudinous dutie.-in this trying
po.-itioii the offi ;ers of the railroad, and his
superiors in the military .-ervice.do not hes
itate to declare. Hut f-r bis energy and
watchfulness, many a.i!'"3 of the road would
have leeti destroyed. On Dec. 20th, 1SC2,
he was relieved from duty along the railroad,
and on the fth of March. C-i, was asianed
to the command ot 4th brigade, 1st division,
th army eoiis.
In lM',4 SfiL't'l tO'ik command of the De
partment of West Va., an l in a re-organj-zation
of the troops. Col. Campbell, at his
own request, was returned to the command
of bis rt-uiment, and took part in the battle
of Ni-w Market. His regiment suffered se
verely, and was the la-t to lenve the fi Id.
But for the determined stand made bv Col.
Campbell. Sijrel's army would have leen
routed arid demoralized. In K-, official re- j
jvirt of the battle.be acknowledged the val- !
uable MTvices of Col. C. in a handsome and
flattering manner, flen. Seieel aNo took i
occasion to tha'ik Col. ( '. in pfron. "Mv i
God ! (.'id. CampU'll. I wish I bad known
yon better," Seiirel exclaimed, grasping the
Gol's hand with both of his own after the
tumult t battle had subsided.
The Col. and bis reciim lit participated iu
the battle of Piedmont. under Jen. Hunter.

three weeks, fitting as a member of a Court
ot Inquiry at Wheeling. Ya., and had but
two "leaves of absence," diirin.tr his whole
period of service, one for ten and the other
lor twenty days.
The political record ot Gen. Campbell
will also bear examination. Brought up a
Jackson I'emocrat, he voied Polk and Dal

In '', the Republicansof Cambria county
presented him to their district conference as
their choice for their Senatorial nomination,
and thr-e years ago he was unnnimourly se
lected an.iiu as thechoiee of the Union party
of Cambria, for State Senator, but failed to
r---'ive the nomination from the district con
ference upon either occasion, not, however,
from want of appreciation of his worth and
services as a citizen and as a brave and mer
itorious soldier.
On the 17th ot Aneust, 1865,Gen. Camp
bell was nominated for Surveyor General by
the Republican party,aDd iu October of that
year, was elected over Col. Linton, his com
petitor, by a lanre majority. For over two
years be has administered the duties of his
otili-ewith recoguized ability, and to the

tip a lan;e amount of unfinished and intri

Convention, for the office he now so ably and
satisfactorily fills, A unanimous rcnom illa

one wit bin our rwollection except Gen Camp

before received such a marked endorsement.
Such in brief, is a hurried sketch of the
life and services of one of Pennsylvania's no-b!c-t
