sides, there is a pleasure in cultivating and
embellishing the earth, improving and in
creasing its products,and thus ad'ling to the
aggregate of human happiness. hy,tlien,
should young men hesitate to become far
mers? It is both profitable and honorable.
It is the nearest approximation to indepen
dence that man, as a member of socicty,ca
make. A gentleman farmer and all 'ar
mers are, or blioulJ be, gentlemen belongs
to an orier of nobility thaf is no indebted
to place-holders for its installation and may,
if he chooses, be ranted among the greatest
benefactors of the human race. Let all idle
young raeagc 'o work on farmland quit
seeking- third and fourth rate clerkships. In
short, go to fanning and quit beeping.
Food for Cows. la the correspondence
of the Ohio Farmer occurs the following :
"I hae had twenty-five cows to milk, and
found timothy and wild grass the best. To
feed in winter, use shorts, ground oats, and
corn meal. Shorts make more milk than
clear meal ; ground oats does better than
either; but corn niAl with shorts makes
richer milk, but no more of it. I have fed
potatoes largely ; they do tolerably well.but
milk a day or two old gets strong. Ruta
baga turnips and carrots would not do for
me to-make butter from the ni'Jk ; but of
all the roots I ever tried, sugar-beet is the
best. I beard pumpkins were good to make
milk, and tried them. I h"ad twelve milk
ers ; I divided them ; fed six with pump
kins three weeks, and all run on grass alike.
Those that had pumpkins gave not a frill
more milk than the others, but I believe it
was a little richer."
Apple Tree Suckers. The Wurking
Farmer says: "Many otherwise good or
chards are allowed to become defaced, as
well as seriously injured, by allowing a pro
fusion of suckers to grow at the base of the
trunks. Attempts are some times made to
get rid of. them by cutting them off down to
the ground, and leaving considerable por
tions below in the form of short stumps.
These sprout again and they become as bad
as ever. A better way is to wait until they
are in leaf, at which time they are loosened
more readily, and taking each separately in
the hands, and placing a thick boot upon it
near the tree, they are quickly separated.
If doue at tha; time, they will nut be likely
to sprout again."

ing the usual annoyance of flies, by simply
washing the parts with inracM of penny
royal. Flies will not alight a moment on
the spot to which this has been applied.

and every livery stable and country inn ought
to have a supply on hand for travelers.
