When Wheat Should be HarveSted.
A great diversity ot opinion exists as to
the best time to eat wheat, the degree of
ripeness at which it should be harvested.
Experiments made in England upon the
same wheat, 1st, when the straw was green ;
2d, when the straw was changing color, 3d,
when fully ripe, gave the following results :
19 bushels per acre ; 231 bushels per acre;
22 bushels per acre. These experiments
show that the time of the second cutting is
that which gives the largest yield, with the
least loss to the farmer. The wheat t3
harvested will also vield a larger i"tity
of fine flour and less bran th cut ear-
tbat the gluten is
lier or later, and proves
converted into starch X the wheat stands
until fully rip
The best time to cut wheat id when the
straw is changing color at each end ot the
stalk, the sap having then ceased to flow.
And the advantage obtained by cutting thus
early is that it prevents the shelling, which
cannot be avoided if cut when fully ripe.
Often during the process of cutting, as
much as two and even four bushels are lost
to an acre, because the wheat is dead ripe.
This is no trifling loss, and might be made
to pay all the expense of harvesting.
The indications of ripeness in wheat are
few and simple. When the straw exhibits
a bright yellow color,balf-way or two-thirds
of the way up the stem, and the ear begins
to bend gently, the grain may be safely cut.
But as a whole field does rot" ripen eveuly
or at the same, time, if one goes through
tbc field and selects the greenest heads, and
the grains separate from the chaff by rub
bing through the palm of the hand, they
are then out ot the milky state and m ay be
reaped with safety.
Wheat is most valuable to millers when
it is cut partially green, for then the grain
baa the most flour and the least bran. For
seed it should never be cut until fully ripe.
The ue of seed wheat that is cut before it
is fully ripe is one great cause of smut in
wheat Smutty wheat itself is much im
proved, if not cut until fully ripe ; and the
use of brine and lime will kill smut to a
great extent. CJtajnJj:rsburrf Repository.
Mice and Yocnu Treks. There has
been a great deal said the last spring on
the injury done to small apple-trees during
last winter by micj, and the only remedy
that we have yet seen suggested is to stamp
the snow firmly around the trees. This is,
however, not believed to be any remedy at
all, and we doubt if it is of much advantage.
But ours is a "remedy," and we have tried
to impress the fact upon our cotcmpwaries
for the last fifteen years, but we should say
judging from the ignorance in answering
corretpoudents what they must do to save
their trees, that it ha received Uttlo atten
tion from them.
It is simply to bandage up the stems of
the trees with any cotton or woolen cloths,
if of old maslin with two or three wrapping,
and let the bandapc go into the ground two
or three inches and eight or ten inehes above
ground, and tie up. This should be re
moved every autumn if necessary, until the
trees are large enough not ta be injured.
Those who are in earnest for a remedy will
try this and save their trees ! but it will be
too much trouble for others to devote a
couple of Lours to this labor annually, and
they will rather run the risk with mice.

Mowinu Weeds. The best thuig to do
with a seeded down barley-stubble infe.-loil
with weeds, says a correspondent of an agri
cultural paper, is to run the mowing-machine
over it, and shave off the stubble,
weeds, etc., close to the ground. I adopted
tb.ii plan last fall on my wheat stubble, on
some sandy knolls that wcreeSull of thistles.
It has checked them sufficiently to enable
the clover to get the start of them this seas
on, and I think it will smother them out.
The mowing- machine is not appreciated as
a means of destroying weeds as fully as it
should be.
An Ant Thai. As the season is now
at hand for the pests, the ants, housewives
and other who are troubled with them may
probably use the following trap to advantage :
Procure a largo spouge, wab it well, press
it dry, which will leave the cells iiuiteo;icij ;
then spriukle over it some fine white su;;ar,
and place it where the ants arc troublesome.
They will soon collect upon the sponge aud
take up their altodes in the cells. It is only
necessary to dip the sponge in scalding hot
water which will wash them out dead. Tut
on more sugar and set the trap for a new
haul ; this process will clear the house of
every ant.
Weevil. An old farmer communicates
to the Nahville papers what he has fouud to
be a sure preventive of weevil in wheat. He
says: "In piling up your wheat alter it has
been cleaned with a fan, to every three
bushels pat in a good hard brick, dried by
the sun, aud be sure it is perfectly dry at
the time you use it. The brick absorbs the
moisture that naturally accumulates in the
grain and causes the wheat to become so
hard and flinty that the insect or fly can
not peuctrate the outer covering.
Gltceiune. A bottle of this should be
kept in every family. It is a clear colorless
syrup, sweet, and forms the main principal of
fats. It has no smell if pure ; hence it is not
disagreeable. For chapped hands it is ex
cellent, preventing the air from reaching the
skin and thus keep it moist It is the best
hair oil in the world, as it never takes on
taint. It keeps the hair moist as it has
the merit of not being dried by the air, but
draws moisture from the atmosphere. It is
also the principal medicine for ear complaints,
especially a dry ear. Tour a few drops into
the car.
Soap for Whitening the Hands.
Take a wine glassful of eau-dc-cologne, and
another of lemon juice ; then scrape two
cakes of brown Windsor soap to a powder,
and mix well. When hard it will be an ex
cellent soap for whitening the hands.
Prepared Gh e. Dissolve eight ounces
best glue in twelve ounces of water and add
