Our Tales are sweet with fern and rose, Our biH" are maple crowned ; JJot do from them our fathers choose, The Tillage burying-ground. The dearest spot in all the land, To Death they set apart; With scanty grace from Nature's hand ; And none from that of Art. A winding wall of mossy stone, Frost-flung and broken Hue, A lonesome acre thinly grown, With grass and wandering vines. Without the wall a birch tree shows Its drooping aaJ ta&solled head ; Within a stag-horn sumach grows Frn-feafed with spikes of red : There, sheep thab graze the neghboring plain Like white ghosts come and go, The farm-horse draws his fetlock chain, The cow-bell tinkles slow. Low moans the river from its Led, The distant pines reply ; Like mourners shrinking from the dead, They stand apart and sigh. Unshaded smites the summer sun, Unchecked the winter blast; The school-girl learns the place to shun, With glances backward ca.st. For thus our fathers testified That he might read who rati The emptiness of human pride, The nothingness of man. The hard and thorny path they kept; From beauty turned aside ; Nor missed they ever those who .slept The grace to life denied. Yet still the wilding flowers would blow, The golden leaves would fall, The seasons couie, the seasons go, And God be good to all. Above the graves the blackberry hung In bloom and green its wreath, And harebells 6wung as if they rung, The chimes of pence beneath. The beauty Nature loves to shore, The gift bhe hath for all, Tho oiuiuou light, the common air, O'er crept the grave-yard's wall. I knew the glow of eventide, The sunrise and the noon, And glorified and sacrificed It slept beneath the momi. AGRICULTURAL. How a Parmer May Loso Money. l?y not taking a good homo paper. Keeping no account of home operations. Paying no attention to the maxim, "A stitch in time saves nine," in regard to the sowing of grain and planting of seed at the proper season. Leaving reapers, plows, cultivators, etc., uncovered from the rain and heat of the sun. More money is lost in this way than most people are willing to believe. Permitting broken implements to be scat tered over the farm until they are irrepara ble. By repairing broken implements at the proper time many dollars may be saved, a proof of the assertion that "time is money.'' Attending the auction sales, aad purchas. ing all kinds of trumpery because, in the words ot the vender, the articles arc '"very cheap." Allowing fences to remain unrepaired un til strange cattle arc found grazing in the meadow, grain-field, or bruising the fruit trees. Disbelieving tho principle of a rotation of crops before making a single experiment. Hunting fruit trees with the expectation of having fruit, without giving the trees halt tho attention required to make them profitable. Practicing economy by depriving stock of proper shelter during winter, and giving them unsound food, such as Lall'rotteu and mouldy hay and fodder. Keeping an innumerable tribe of rats on the premises, and two or three lazy dogs that cat up more in a month than they a"re worth in a whole liletime. And lastly, he loses by not reading the advertisements of those who patronize the printer, they being invariably the most en terprising and liberal houses to deal with, when he goes to town. Hay Making. Almost any person would think so sim ple a process was easily understood. It re quires only a visit to the first hay field to see that few know what they are about. The object to be accomplished is to get the grass to dry as rapidly as possible. It is there fore an evil to turn it while there is any dew on the ground, or any moisture iu the at mosphere. But there are sometimes other things (o be kept in view. If the ground bo damp, if the air is so dry that the cut grass may evaporate its moisture faster than the earth parts with it, it will pay to turn tho hay. Again, in a wet time, the grass will sometimes lay a conple of days in the swath until it begins to turn yellow for want of light It may, therefore, be a gain some times to turn it over, even though wet. If, however, there be dancer of rain, it is let ter to let it lie in bulk, as rain wakUea out the sugary and gelatinous matters which, give the value to hay.and leaves it like well used tea leaves, from which it is hard to squeeze another drop fit to drink. Jlany are afraid to put away hay half-dried, for fear of heating iu the barn ; but grass which has dried rapidly, does not heat near as quick as hay which has one been wet and then dried thoroughly. Heating is a result of dee-juipoaition, and the matter washed out of hay in & rain-storm is required to rrevent decay. How or what the hay-maker should do, will depend on circumstan ces. He must apply bis knowledge as the occasions arise. IJe must keep in mind the objects he has to awuiplfch, which are to evaporate the water in the grass as rapidly as possible, and to cur.rd agaiust anv decom poMtwn, until die crop is in condition to haul awnv.
