CLEARFIELD, PA., JUNE 24, 1868.

We are born ; we laugh ;" we weep ;
We lova ; we droop ; we die I
Ah! wherefore do we laugh or weep?
Why do we live or die ?
Who knows that secret deep?
Alas, not I !
Why doth the violet spring
Unseen by human eye ?
Why do the radient seasons bring
Sweet thoughts that quickly tiy ?
Why do our fond hearts cling
To things that die ?
We toil through pain and wrong ;
We fight and fly ;
We love ; we lose; and then ere long,
Stone dead we lie.
Oh ! Life, is all thy song
Endure an1 die?

England seems likely to get ahead of us
in a matter, in regard to which the general
impression is, we can defy competition.
Mr." Bright recently declared in the House
of Commons that the present House is the
most corrupt House of Commons ever as
sembled; that he had computed the total
amount paid by the present members at

A benevolent lady went to visit a family
who were said to be almost starving. She
found them half clad.cold, and not a morsel
of food in the house. "What do you most
need? sha asked of the mother of the fam
ily. "Why. I did a'wostwant a headdress
they're so becoming!" This, with a little
meat and flour, and a photograph album
would have completed the poor woman's
happiness.
A local editor has iust seen a man whom
he thinks pretty well occupied. lie -had
his wifo on one arm, a baby on the other,
a basket and cane in his hands, a cigar in
his mouth and two litttle hopeful heirs at
tached to his coat tails.-
Some one. curious in these matters has
made a calculation in regard to the salaries
paid to ministers in this country and the
number of sermons says that the average
price paid for a sermon, take thj land thro',
is only three cents.
Eve is said to Be the only woman who
never threatened to go to live with her

"Are you' near sighted, Miss?" said an
impudent fellow to a young lady who did
not choose to notice him. "Yes; at this
distance I can hardly tell whether you are a
pig or a puppy."
It is altogether too absurd to say that
"man is not perfect" Who is thcrer.who
has not met with perfect strangers.some who
were perfect rascals, and not a few who were
perfect fools?
If it is true that when wine is in the head
wit is out, does it follow that when wine is

the graver people are the more funny they
appear. j

"Well, Pat, why don't you put up your
