Wife and children near the spot,

Full of discord dirt, and din,
No wonder he seemed mad,
Wife and children starved within.
, Still they worked in the same field,
: Toiled on from day, to day,
Both had the same hard labor,

But they worked not with one will,
The reason let me tell :
Lo! the one drank at the still,
The other at the wlL
The Methodist.General Conference, now
in session at Chicago, may be said to repre
sent the whole Met hodist family throughout
the world, and is authorized to legislate for
that part of it resident in the United States.
The Methodist Church, according to the la
test official figures attainable, nu miners, ex
clusive ot probationers, 3,300,729 members.
Of this number 2,497,540 are resident in
America ; and 2,358,425 are members of the
churches represented in the present Confer
ence, and are resident in the United States.
The Methodist Church, as is well known,
has grown to be one of the most prominent
branches in Protestantism throughout tha
world ; the above figures reveal the fact that
"a great proportion of the members of the
Church are resident in this country.
Too Bad. Miss Betsy Pearl is "fair;fat
and forty' and unmarried. She manages
to obtain an honest and comfortable living
by keeping a small shop of "notions.'-' She
is a spruce old dame, and, among other ar
ticles, Tends spruce beer. One evening a
customer .called for a glass of the beverage
inquiring at the same time if it was new
made beer.. ......
"No," exclaimed a waggish bystander,
just as the worthy dame was about to reply
in the affirmative ; "tcan assure yu it is
lold maid' beer.".
The wag was seen suddenly to leave the
ladys' premises with a glass flying after him.
A minister of Indianopolis proposes that
hereafter, instead of saying, "let us sing ths
Doxology," the minister shall say, "Let us
put on our overcoats, adjust furs, slip on
gloves, gTab our hats, look to the Lord, and
be dismissed. "
An old lady, reading an accoun of a dis
tinguished old lawyer who was said to be the
father of the New York bar, exclaimed:
"Poor man ! he had a dreadful set of chil
dren r . ; -
