Kiss and clasp her neck again ; ' Hereafter the may hare a son Will kits and clasp her neck in rain. Lore thy Mother, little one. Gsza upon her lovisg eyes, And mirror back her lore for thoe ; Hereafter thou may'st shudder sighs. To meet them when they cannot seo. Gaze upon her loring eyas. 4 Press her Hps the while they glow , With love that they hare often told; Hereafter thou may'st press in woe, And kiss them till thine own are oold. Press her lips the while they glow. ft - " 0 revere her raven hair, . Although it be not silver gray ; Too early death, led 09 by care, May snatch, save one dear lock, away. O revere her raven hair. Pray for ber at eve and morn. That Heaven may long the stroke defer ; For thou may'st live the hour forlorn. When thou wilt ask to die with her. Pray for her at eve and morn. - "I'll Take What lather Takes." "What will you take to drink !" asked the waiter of a young lad who,br the first time, accompanied his' lather to a public dinner. Uncertain what to stay, and feeling sure that he coald not be wrong if he fol lowed his father's example, lis replied, "I'll take what father takes.' The answer reached his father's car, and instantly the full responsibility of his posi tion flashed upon- him. Ir" he said, 'I'll take ale," as he had always said before, his son would take it also, and thenf And the fatherhuddered, as the history of several young men who, once promi.-ing as his own bright lad. had been ruined by drink, star ted up in solumn warning before him. Should his hopes also be blasted and that open faced, noble lad become a burden and a curse, as they had become 1 But for strong drink, they would have been active, tamest, prosperous men; and if 4 it could work such rum upon them, was his own lad i-afe ! Quicker than lightning this thought parsed through pis mind, and iu a moment the decision was made. ''If the boy falls, he shall not have me to blame ;" and then iu toirjs tremulous with emotion, and to the astouishuient of those who knew - him, be said, "Waiter, I'll take water ;" and from that day to this, strong drink has been ban ished from that man's table and from that man's home. The young lad, in this brief utterance, was really the representative of the genera tion to which he belongs. God has bo de creed it,that a father is th3 highest author ity in the world to his child. Who loes hot know that J'JIy father said so" is the end of all controversy with the little ones around as ! Who does not see the parent's tone and gait, and manners reproduced con tinually iu the children, whose nature is now "soft as wax to receive an impression, and rigid as marble to retairit ;" and who watch with a quick and imitating eye those who, to them, are God's vicegerents ! Would that we could impress upon the fathers and mothers of this country the sol emn fact, that the future character of the children if being formed by them. That if they areirained up in the way they should go, when they are old they will not depart from it. But if they become vain, sensual and degraded, the seeds will have been de posited and the bias given in the early morn ing of their lives. If we teach them that Kroner drink is a good creature of God, they will believe us; and when depending upon our judgment and truth, they shall have ta ken it, and it shall have shown itself to be the devil's master-piece, and have , bitten, and crushed, and dragged them down to ru iu, we may weep and pray as we please the blame will be our own, and we must not accuse God, or cast reflections upon the fo.pel. We shhll have sown to the flesh, aol of the flesh have reaped corruption. iod will have visited the sins of the fath ers upon the children. They only "took what their lathers took." If, on the other hand, we banish the fiend when their young and trusting hearts are most open to our teach ing, we tell them that wine i3 a mocker, that strong drink is raging, and warn them that no sernent is so daneerous, no adders so much to be dreaded, we shall be co-workers ith ail-merciful and wise God vho, to pre serve them from taking il.has sent thera in to the world with a loathing of its very taste. Our child; en will believe us. They will P"ow up with their natural instinct fortified our instruction and example. They will w preserved from the poisonous influence of the destroyer. There will be a brigeless gulf between them and the companions hoare most likely Xo lead them into the wavsofin. Thev will be preserved from habits of extravagance and waste. Phtva TYia mnat. wnnn prful country in jta world is China. It contains nearly one klf of the population of the earth. The Provinces which are governed by the heu knants of the emperor are larger and more ""tsty peopled than any European kuijjuoui. 'he civilization of China is older than that f Europe, and there is scarce'y any so-called 'lern invention, with the exception of the I eam engine and telegraph, that has not :vvu ill USB IOr Williy ucuiuuca 111 uiikv. "pular education is more general there than any other country in the world, and the structure is so firmly and securely es- 1 gashed that it seems impossible to snate 'a the least, indeed, the more one learns Qcerning thia remark oble country and its jple, the more interesting does the study " them become. Electrical Jewelry. M. Trouve, a Parasian jeweler, has re cently created quite a sensation in that city by the production of some remarkable gold ornaments, consisting of scarf pins, chains, charms, and hair ornaments, in which, by means of ingenious mechanism, moved by electricity, some curious, and startling ef fects are realized1. About fifteen articles of this sort are advertised ; first comes a gren adier, in uniform, standing in front of a ga bion, and beating a drum, performing any air desired ; then a monkey, seated upon a drum, and playing a violin ; a Turk's head with a cap on,- which opens and shuts its mouth and eyes ; a death s head iu a jockey cap, whose eyes and mouth also move ; a rabbit, striking alternately two small 'drum sticks upon a bell placed in front of him ; a double spherical bell, which sounds an alarm ; a Lilliputian revolving magnet, which at tains a velocity of 100 to 120 revolutions a second ; a rabbit similar to the one above discribed,'but with the movement uncover ed ; a death's head moviifg his eyes and mouth, as if speaking; a Turk, moving the eyes horizontally and the lower jaw verti cally; a monkey in spectacles, making gri maces, whose eyes turn through a half cir cumference ; and as the unner half has the L color of the animal, it appears as if the eye- has drooped, as in the case with monkeys ; a decapitated head upon a table, which talks and rolls its eyes. These are all arranged to be worn as scarf pins, and of course are very small. For a charm, M. Trouve Tnakes a minute theatri cal stae, upon which two fgures, Harlequin and. Columbine, execute a ballet. One of the most beautiful head ornaments described is a humming bird, studded with diamonds, which moves both its wings and tail. The power by which all these life-like movements are produced, is obtained from a minute battery, placed in the waistcoat pocket, or in some part of the dress ; or for the head ornaments it may be concealed in the folds of the hair. It consists of a plate of zinc and one of carbon, contained within a closely-fitting case, which is half filled with an acid solution of m mercuric tttl phate. So long as the case remains upright the liquid does not come in contact with the plates, and there is no action ; but on in verting it, or placing it horizontally, a cur rent js set in motion which continues until the zinc or the solution is exhausted. The electricity thus developed is conveyed to the jewels by a fine, flexible, metaliu cord, and they are put in action by simply reversing the battery case. The time during which these movements continue is quite remarka ble. In a death's head and a rabbit, like these just mentioned, they have been main tained during nine hoars a day, for six months uninterrupted, without exhausting the battery. Education of Children. Like almost every other matter connected with education, the foundaiion of good be havior should be laid in infancy. It is un reasonable to expect a boy to say "Thank 3'ou," for example, for services rendered or gifts bestowed, if in babyhood he las been taught to regard all about him as willing slaves, and to accept voluntary offerings as a right. The first aim should be, not to teach chil dren to assert their rights, but to feel their dependence on the good will of those who serve them. Before a child can-understand verbal reproof, he should be checked when caught snatching at things ; and ere he can utter his thanks in perfect laguage, that sweet monosyllable "ta"- should grace his lips. An infant who was brought up on this principle earned for himself the appellation of the "polite baby," from the habit he ac quired of making two abort grunts in imita tion of the words "thank you," which be perceived were always repeated for his imi tation whenever anything Was given him. Trivial as these occurrences seem, to write about, they are the best illustrations of the principle to observe iu educating the young, viz : to adapt our teaching to the feeble pow ers of children's comprehension. At a time when almost every mental fac ulty is undeveloped, it isjfolly to suppose that precepts are comprehensible. The only way to "make them so is to demonstrate them by example. Example is the sole means of ap pealing to an unformed intelligence. Long before words have any meaning.the senses are perfect in their working. Guided by these, and these alone, a child would commit innu merable breaches of propriety; but by direct ing their course, and supplying fit objects for them to work upon, tastes and habits become healthy and refined ; a second nature is, in fact, established, whose dictates are obeyed instinctively. We ?udge men severely when they display vicious propensities ; but it the nursery life of those individuals were known our judgment would often be tempered with mercy. We should see that one who had been habitually treated with cruelty could not fail to be cruel, and that when cheating and lying were constantly perpetrated in his presence, nothing short of a miracle could prevent the man from becoming a cheat and a liar. Minor vices are of no less certain growth. "We are," says Locke, "a sort of chamelion, that still takes a tincture from what is near us."
