RAFTING. Within the past week, a large
number of rafts passed this place on their
wav to market. ; An unusual amount of
atovirg'' occurred in the mountains, and
tou very valuable rafts are reported as en
tire losses to their owners. These losses are
not all attributed to mere accident, but, in
Home cases, a we are informed, to the care
lessness and incompetency of the pilots. If
this be the fact, we would advise owners of
rafts tabe more careful in the future as to
wboaa -they employ -as 4Iois - It would be
better to leave the timber lie,, than to en
trust its running to inexperienced, incompe
tent, or care lesa persons. '.
Excellent Whitewash. A lady cor
respondent of the Gtnnar.town Telegraph,
heud the following to the editor of that pa
per, with the remark that she "has found it
to bo, excellent and the best she ever tried,"
bnd wishes others to have the benefit of her
Viteueuee ; "As the house-cleaningtime
will soon be here?it may cot be amiss to say
a few words in regard to whitewashing.
There are many recipes published, but we
believe the following to be the best that can
be used ': white chalk is the best substitute
for lime as a wash. A very fine and brilliant
whitewash preparation of chalk is called
'Paris white.' - This we buy at the paint
tores for three Cents a pound, retail. For
ttach sixteen pounds of Paris white we pro
cure half a pound of the white transparent
glue costing twenty-five cents (fifty cents a
pound). The sixteen pounds of Paris white
are about as much as a person will use in a
day." It is prepared as follows: the glue is
covered with cold water, at night and in the
morning is carefully heated, without scorch
ing, until dissolved. The Paris white is
Ftirred in with hot water enough to give it
the proper milky consistency for applying to
the walls and the dissolved glue is then ad
ded and thoroughly mixed. It is then ap
plied with a brush like the common lime
whitewash. " Except on very dark and smo
ky walls and ceilings, a single coat is suffi
cient. It is nearly equal in brilliancy to
'line white,' a far more expensive article."
An Organ ."Galloping" into Favor.
A most remarkable piece of musical me
chanism, in" the shape of an . organ, repre
senting the vox hurnana, (human voice,) is
creeping or rather galloping into public fa
or. It is known as the "Burdett Organ,"
whose tones, no not tones merely or ab
stractly considered as such,, but whose ut
terances are made to excite almost any emo
tions of the human heart, whether of joy or
of sorrow, atthe will of the performer, and
nse the listencr.to wonder Low it lives
without eating and drinking, like human
kings. Those enterprising gentlemen, H.
Kleber & Bro-122 Wood street,Pittsburg,
nave it for sale, and would be pleased to ex
hibits those who desire to witness its.pow
ers, the wonderful capacity it possesses to
o-pire our minds, stir our hearts, and min
gle its tender and touching sympathies with
those of the human breast ' It is said that

pecimen of human invention, for the sec

The deceased wag a ldy, lored and esteemed

with the M. K. Church, and - bv her exemplary
walk, the boldness of her profession, and. the
spiritua ity of her life, gave satisfactory evidence
that she wai living in oloseconimunion with God.
Being yourjg. bowever. and the world presenting
so many allurements, she was led astray. Becom
ing burdened with tho care of a family, and mov
ing ber residence frequently and at short inter
vals, her Chun h relations were dissolved. On
approaching her last illness, her spiritual sky was
clouded. She frequently expressed to ber most
intimate friends bicier regrets lor that course of
conduct that had driven the Saviour from ber
heart, and robbed her of religious enjoyment.
Remembering, that "if any one in, we have an
advocate with the Father," she turned with all
ber heart to Christ, and being encouraged by the
counsel and praye a of christian friends around
ber, was enabled to cast herself entirely upon the
merits of the atonement, and realize that the
blood of Christ cleansetb from sin and destroys
the fear of death. The last week of ber life was
doubtless the happiest She frequently express
ed herself as desirous to depart, and olten prayed
for ber speedy deliverance from earth. Her
death was truly peaceful and triumphant. She
leaves a husband and two small children, with a
large oircle of relatives and friends, to mourn
her loss. u.
