; THE SKEIU. :
Slip, yes, slip your skein, my Kitty,
O'er iay bands, ami wind, and wind,
All the while with little pity, m
Tangling, tangling, heart and mind ;
Kitty I eyes upon the wool ? ,
Not on me, my beautiful ! '
Now you droop your eyes completely, -Winding,
winding, dreamilie ;
Wherefore, wherefore, smile so sweetly
On a thing that cannot see ?
If you must smile, smile this way I
I will bear it as I may.
And the rosebud fingers flitting .
Swift about the colored ball ;
How my heart beats time whilst sitting,
Still I try to bear it all ;
Kitty, do you know or care
'Tis my heart you're winding there?
Kitty, I am in a vision !
All the world to mist doth die ;
Only, in an airy Elysian,
Little fairy fingers fly ;
Surely, if they flit too near,
I shall catch and kiss them, dear !
Tangled I pout not, frown not, Kitty,
Though I gladly bear the pain ;
For your anger is so pretty,
It may make me sin again. .
There, 'tis well! now, wind and wind,
Tangling further heart and mind 1
Now. 'tis done! the last thread lingers
Sadly from me slow to part ;
Can'st thou see that in my fingers . .
I am holding up my heart '(
Wind and wind ! I do not care !
Smile or frown ! and I will bear !
AH ! so fast and quick you wind it,
I no more can keep it mine ;
Do you wonder that you find it
Throbbing now, close, close to thine ?
Tangled, tangled are the twain,
Kiss, kiss, kiss them free again 1
The Eternal Word. .
No fragment of an army ever survived so
many battles as the Bible ; no citadel ever
stood so many seigos ; no rock was ever bat
tered by so many hurricanes andso swept by
storms. And yet it stands. It has seen the
rise and downfall of Daniel's four empires.
Assyria bequeathes a few mutilated figures
to the niches of the National Museum. Me
dia and Persia, like Babylon, which they
conquered, have been weighed in the balance
and long ago found wanting. Greece faint
ly survives in its historic name; " 'Tis liv
ing Greece no more ;" and the iron Dome
of the Caesars is held in precarious occupa
tioa by a feeble hand. And yet the Rock
that foretells all this, survives. While na
tions, kings, philosophers, systems, institu
tions, have died away.the Bible now engages
man's deepest thougts, is examined by the
keenest intellects, stands revered before the
highest tribunals, is more read, and sifted,
and debated, more devotedly loved, and
more vehemently assailed, more defended
and more denied, more industriously trans
lated and freely given to the world, more
honored1 and abused than any book the world
ever saw. It survives all changes, itself un
changed ; it sees all things decay ; itself in
corruptible, it sees myriads of other books
engulfed in the stream of time, yet it- is
borne along triumphantly on the wave; and
it will be borne along till the mystic angel
shall plant his foot upon the sea, and swear
by him that liveth forever and ever, that
time shall be no longer. ''For flesh is as
grass, and all the glory of man as the flower
of the gra&j. The grass withereth, and the
flower thereof fUdeth away ; but the Word
of the Lord er.dureih forever."
Read an Hour a Day. There was a
lad who, at the age of fourteen, wa3 ap
prenticed to a soap boiler. One of his res
olutions was to read one hour a day, or at
least at that rate, and he had an old silver
watch.left him by his uncle which he timed
his reading by. lie stayed seven years with
his master, and said when he was twenty
one he knew as much as the young squire
did. Now let us see how much time he had
to read in, in seven years, at the rate of an
hour each day. It would be two thousand
five hundred and fifty-five hours, which at
the i ate of eight reading hours per day,
would be equal to three hundred and ten
days ; almost to an entire year's reading.
That time spent in treasuring up useful
knowledge would pile up a verv lanre store.
I am sure it is worth trying for. . Try what
you can do. Begin now. In after years you
will loot back, upon the task as the most
pleasant and the most profitable you ever
pertormed.
A certain conceited old doctor, when call
ed to children, always prescribed for one and
the same remedy worms. Being summon
ed one day to the bedside of a little boy, he
gravely sat down and, having felt the pa
tient's pulse, looked up over his spectacles,
and said to his mother in a solemn tone,
"Worms, madam, worms 1" To which the
mother responded, "I tell ye, doctor, the
boy hain't got a worm. He stumbled over
a stick of wood and broke his leg, and I
want it set quick. Worms, madam, I
assure you worms in the wood !"
Somebody, speaking of the hurrying pro
pensities of the Yankees, says : "If a big
mortar could be constructed, which would
throw an immense bombshell, containing
fifteen passengers, from S.t. Louis to Boston,
in five minutes, with an absolute certainty
that fourteen would be killed by the explo
sion, tickets for seats by the 'Express Bomb
Shell Line' would at once be at a premium,
each passenger being anxious for the chance
to prove himself the lucky fifteenth."
A disturbed preacher remarked : "If that
cross-eyed lady, in the side aisle, with red
hair and a blue bonnet, don't stop talking I
must point her out to the congregation."
An old bachelor thinks that the trails of
ladies dresses are infernal machines, from
the fact that a blow up look place directly
after he put his foot on one. , . -

The old lady who used to dry her clothes
on the equinoctial line has gone to Green
land to get the north pole to draw cistern
water with.
A clergyman said he addressed his con
gregation of ladies and gentlemen as breth
ren, because the "brethren" embraced the
ladies. 1
