CLEARFIELD, PA. APRIL 8, 1868. . LIFE IS BUT A SPAS'. Life is but a span of horses ; One is "Age," the other "Prime," Up and down the hill our course is : "Go in," ponies, "iuake yonr time." Boyhood plies the whip of pleasure ; Youthful folly gives a stroke ; . Manhood goads them at hia leisure ; "Let 'em rip, they're tough as oak." . "Hi yal there !" the stakes we'll pocket, To the winds let care be lent ; Time 2:40, 'whip in socket ;" "Give 'em string and let ,em went." On the sunny road to fifty, ' "Prime" is drowned id Lethe's stream ; ."Age" is left lame, old, unthrifty; . Life then proves a "one horse team." "Age" goes on, grows quite unsteady, Reels and slackens in his pace ; "Kicks the bucket," always ready, "Gives it up" death wins the race. What Are Tou Doing? Thoughtless and indolent persons will re g ly "Nothing," or "Nothing in particular." Jut they are mistaken. Though not en- eaeed in any regular employment, they are forming character. There is no standing still in life. We advance or recede grow ing in grace, or going to waste, A thought ful or industrious person will reply, "I am trying to improve 'myself, that I may be more useful to others, and thus increase my own happiness." A thriftless young man will "wait for something tourn up," in stead of going to work and turning some thing up. One "waits for dead men's shoes," while another more enterprising earns his own shoes. What are you doing ? Are you improving in mind or in pocket ? You should do both at the same time. We can , work and think, or, machine like, work and not think. Elihu Burrett, the learned blacksmith, is said to have studied many languages more than fifty while working at the anvil. Shoe makers have become legislators and states wen ; and a good tailor may be promoted to a high office. Gen. Grant was a tauner and currier. All great men, or men who rise in life, have been real workers and hard stu dents. Nor is it wise to be over nice as to the calling, so that it be useful and honora ble. Too many, who are not fitrbr them, aim for the learned professions, not realizing the fact, that it is better to be a good me chanic, farmer, or merchant, than a poor lawyer, doctor, or preacher. The question should be, "In what calling can I do the most good ? be most useful? succeed the best ? But if you would not become a de pendent pauper, a miserable vagabond, go to work and do something make brooms or baskets, fish nets or fanning mills, and thus call the faculties into use, and develop them. It is wicked to be idle. What are you doing ? Another Subterranean Wonder, At La Crosse thejhave been boring an artesian well. At the depth of two hundred and eighty feet the workmen at the well became sensible of a remarkaMe change going on . within the bore ; the drill had been working through a substratum of dark porous rock for five hours, and had been making rapid progress, when suddenly the machinery stopped, the rods became violently agitated, and & deafening explosion ensued; followed by a stream of boiling water, gushing with mighty force through the tube from the 'depth below. The startled workmen were blinded by clouds of steam. ' George Hayes, the workman in charge of the drill at the time, had a very narrow escape. He receiv ed a jet of boiling water on his neck and breast, but was partially protected by heavy woolen clothing. Others were more or less injured. The upward pressure is supposed to be not less than two nundred , pounds to the square inch. The mean temperature is e about 183 of Reamur's thermometer. ALad in Luck. The Cleveland (Ohio) Plaindeahr says : Lemuel Jones, a lad about sixteen years of age, yesterday met with extraordinary good fortune. He was engaged in the task of walking from Erie to Chicago, being a ventursome lad, and hav ing some vague plan of seeking his fortune in the latter city. Between Euclid and Cleveland, he picked up a large wallet, tight ly tied with a piece of red tape. Upon open ing the wallet $6,000 in greenbacks were disclosed to the glistening eyes of the boy, who had not expected t find his fortune in bo short a time after leaving home. There were no papers in the wallet indicating to whom it belonged, and it is possible the boy will remain in undisputed possession of the money. The wallet had been exposed to the weather and was considerably damaged ; some of the greenbacks, too, were somewhat injured, but not to affect the value of any of them. ' , AlX There. A whole family in heaven! Who can picture or describe the everlasting day ? No one absent ; nor father, nor moth er, nor son, nor daughter, are away. In, the world below they were united in faith, and love, and peace, and joy. In the morning of the resurrection they ascended together. Before the $irone they bow together in uni ted adoration. On the banks of the River of Life they walk hand in hand, and as a family have commenced a career of glory which shall be everlasting. There is to be hereafter no separation in that family. No one is to lie down upon a bed of pain ; no ona to wauder in the arms of death. Nev er, in heaven, is that family to move alone in the slow procession, clad in the habili ments of woe, to consign one of its members to the tomb. God grant that, in his infin iff mercy, every family may be thus united. Poultry. The yard should be cleared of all but the stock intended to be kept over. For farmers the Brahma, Dorking, or other medium or rather large bodied breeds, are the best. The eggs are larger, and the fowls are more satisfactory when served on the table, t resh meat, variety ot food, and good quartets, will coax quite a'supply of eggs from tne poultry this month. A few broods of very early chickens will be splen did for the table, or profitable for market An auctioneer at a late sale of antiquities, put up a helmet, with the following candid observation : ''This, ladies and gentlemen, is a helmet of Romulus, the Roman founder, but whether he was a brass or iron founder I cannot tell."
