SPBIKC-TIME.
IIow pleasant is the springtime,
When sulb's ana sUi'iiid depart,
And bummer s breath trotn other climes,
Bid raptured feelings swell the heart.
When tree and shrub in bIos.-.oms decked,
With ineensa fill th aii- .
And coral strains in triumph rise '
When bird sings love to mate more fair.
In springtime's mild and sunny hours,
. New scenes our thought beguile ;
Mem'ry forgetful of the past.
In preseiit is abOibed the while.
'Tia then we learn from nature's book
AVhat man's great aim should be ;
To live ! but not for self alone,
But God, and tU humanity.
Grafting.
As the time will soon be here when graft
ing will be in order, we will repeat our for
mer advice that every farmer should do his
own grafting. It is a very easy operation
when once . understood, ar.d this is readily
done by seeing the operation. A sharp pen
knife and a good fine saw are indispensable.
Splitting the stalk so that the bark shall not
be bruised and shaping the scion wedge
fashion both ways, preserving- the bark un
injured and placing the rim of the wood
of both stock and scion exactly together,
so that the sap can intermingle there is
no danger in failure if properly waxed. We
make a shoulder to the graf's an 1 think it
adds to the certainty, of success, though
probably weakens it. We prefer also two
eyes or buds to a graft, and would rather
have only one than more tbstn two. One
year's wood should always Le used when.. it
can be obtaiued, as it U more -certain to
take the growths.
We wish to remind those preparing graft
ing wax, that we have found four parts of
rosin, on part of beeswax, and one part of
beef tallow to be the best proportions. Molt
them together' in a skillet (which is the
best), or a tin cap, and mix well It should
remain in the vessel an 1 be mad as tieodjJ.
Twenty or thirty scions can Le waxed with
one heating up. When much grafting is to
be done, a litde Sro for heating the wax
should be made on - the spot, between two
bricks or stones.
We have seen various preparations for
making grafting wax, and we be
lieve we have tried them all, but prefer our
own. Applying warm or hot does not in
jure the graft. The object to attain in the
proportion is that the wax will not crack in
cooling or dry weather, or run in warm
weather. If however, upon trial, different
proportions bhould be required, the forego
ing can be altered' though after trying them
in several ways. we have conie back to these.

Bones and Ashes. Busies and ashes
pass through the housekeeper's hands every
day. Wood is still the elder fuel in the farm
house and the value of the ahes is pretty
well understood. They are prized for the
lve thev vield. and if there is a surplus from
the soap making they iii i the kitchen gar
den at the Lack door. The Loners are gen
erally thrown to the dog ana lost. Now iT
the careful houwife would save the bones
as regularly as the a.-dies,she would practice
a wiser economy and help her kitchen gar
den twice as fast. Roues are worth twice as
much as ashes for manure, if dissolved, and
the ashes will reduce them. Put both into
a barrel in the c.ilar, if you please, a:id Sif
ter mixing them ha!l and half, keep tiicm
constantly moist with fcoapsud--, the hotter
the better. T'm .suds should not be poured
on in fiuch ua'!titics as to loach' the usLes.
In a few months the Lones will belisinteg
rated and the whole matthen be mixtdand
will make an excellent fertilizer fur the tlow
er border or the kitchen garden. . --
