RAFT-SHAH'S CLEARFIELD, VA. MARCII 25, 1868. THE COUNTBY COUPLE. Do you remember, Mary dear, As you pass through the porch, A good old country couple in The first pew of the church ? He walks on crutches as he comes - ' Adown the dusty way ; She wears a queer old bonnet, he A coat of homespun gray. 'Tis said their early life was like Some strange and wild romance ; His heart the eagle's courage shared,' His eye the eagle's glance. And she ah, who could dream it now? "Was beautiful and fair, With radiant eyes, and ruby lips, And sunny waves of hair. She stood amid the maiden throng, The lovely and the good, As 'mid the beauties of the East The Jewish Esther stood. They loved as few e'er loved on earth You smile and look away ; You're thinking of her bonnet, and His coat of homespun gray. They loved as few e'er loyed on earth, With undivided heart, But there are spirits stern and cold And they were forced to part A The maiden sighed for him she loved, And grew as slight, as pale, As beautiful as shadows make The lily of the vale. She sighed by day, and wept by night, You should not be so gay ; , You're thinking of her bonnet, and His coat of homspun gray. But, one night, when the flowry bells Swung on each airy stalk, A form, as noiseless as the breeze, Passed down the garden walk. Passed down the garden walk, but paused Before .the open gate; ' She knew who mid the linden trees Had promised he would waitN . They hastened through the dewy fields, And, with the rising sun, A bridal ring gleamed on her hand, Those two founckiiearts were one. They've known joys and griefs since first iney were so wildly wed ; The cherised forms God gave them, all Are numbered with the dead. And now they live alone, and watch The swift years glide away ; She wears the queer old bonnet, he The coat of homespun gray. And sometimes, as I watch them in Their wide old-fashioned pew, I think how time will deal with me, How it may deal with you. A few short years, and we no more ' Shall thus be young and gay ; v You'll wear some queer old bonnet, I Some coat of homespun gray. But, O ! whatever trials come, Whatever sorrows fall, Though grace and joy with youth depart Yet love 6hall live through all. Composition. The following composi tion was recent y read in a neighboring school. We give it verbatim : Doflrs is U3efuller as cats. Mice is afeerd of cats. They bite 'em. Dogs foller boys. and catches a hog by the ear. Hogs rarely bite. Sheeps bite people. People eat hogs but not the Jews, as they and other animals tbat doesn't chew the cud isn't clean ones. Dogs sum times git hit with boot jacks for barking of nites. Sleepy people git mad and throw at 'em. Dogs is the best animal for man ; they do more for man than grownd hogs or koons or gotes. Gotes smell. The end. Two enterprising men opened a new sa loon at New Paris, Ohio, recently, and a number of ladies, with leap-year adaucity and their every day knitting, marched to the saloon, took seats, and staid until night. Next day the visit was repeated, and pro longed until nine o'clock in the evening. The following day the saloon was for rent. Hon. Mrs. Norton, in her novel of "Old Sir Douglas," winds up-a highly wrought death scene thus : "The anguish of mortal pain seemed to melt into peace. A great sigh escaped him, such as bursts from the bosom in some sudden relief from suffering, and the handsome man was a handsome corpse." Self-help is the best help iu the world ; when once a man applies to it he will not readily apply to any other help. A work man, if he devote himself to the special duty of making his home happy, and of im proving his condition, will soon raise him self above what demagogues call the oppres sed classes. A letter had been safely delivered to the person to whom it has been addressed inI owa, which had, besides the usual super scription, these words : ''There is a ten dol lar bill folded in this letter, and if you want it worse than my mother does take it." Our homes are like instruments of music. The strings that give melody or discord are the members. If each is rightly attuned they will all vibrate in harmony: but a sin gle discordant string jars through the in strument and destroy its sweetness. An old lady, from a temperance village, recently atteuded a party where champagne was served, and was prevailed upon to take a .lass. After drinking it, she smacked her lips and exclaimed: "It may be a Kicked drink-, but 'tis good" A curious Western visitor inquired if the State Prison was reckoned among our insti tutions of charity? "Certainly," was the reply, "it 'covers a multitude of sins. " A gentleman praising the gnerosity of nis inena, ODserved : "lie spends his mon ey hke water. ' ' ' 'Then, of course, he liqui dates his debts," rejoined a wag. An bonest dutchman on being asked how often he shaved, replied, "Dree dimes a week every tay put Soontay ; den I shafe every tay l" m The bread of life is love ; the salt of life u 'fcjthe sugar of life, poetry; and the water of life is faith.
