Ugh! Cold ! On Monday morning.Feb
ruary 3d, the mercury indicated fourteen
'degrees below zero, in this place. This, we
believe, was tbe coldest morning of the sea
son. Id the afternoon, however, the sun
shone quite warm and pleasant.
Worth Tryino. When a crack is dis
covered in a stove, through which the smoke
or fire penetrates, the aperature may be ef
fectually and readily closed with a composi
tion consisting of- wood ashes and common
salt, made into a paste with water. Plas
ter thisxer the crack.
Arm Broke. We learu that a little
daughter Ot Jacob Strickland, of Clearfield
Bridge, hid ens of her arms broken on Fii
diy, January 31st, by the falling over of a
table. The fracture was reduced, and sho
is getting along as fast as could be expect
ed from the nature of her injuries.
Arrested. Two men supposed to be
the murderers of Casey (a full account of
which we give in another column) were ar
rested and lodged in the county jail on Mon
day, February 3d. The SheriiF will have to
use extraordinary precautions, if he succeeds
in keeping them until they can have a hear

Clearfield Academy. The Third ses
sion, of the present Scholastic year, of the
Clearfield Acadeniy.commences on Monday!
; February 17th. Those. interested in having
their children educatedshould remember
the time. This institution is inferior to
none iu the State. Read the advertise
ment. The County Finances. Iu this weeks'
J'ntrual will be found a statement of the
Finances, which will be read with interest
by all. It is a more full and comprehensive
Htatetneut than has heretofore been publish
ed in this county, for which the people are in
debted to the present efficient board of Aud
itors. Leo Broken. We are .informed that a
boy named Wilson of Bradford township,
lull off a ladder on Friday, January 31st, and
broke one of his legs. The bone was proper
ly set, and he is getting along as well as the
character of his injuries will warrant. Boys
should be careful how they climb ou ladders
while there is ice and snow about.
To Prevent Rusting. A mixture of
three pints of lard and one of rosin, melted
together, is one of the best coatings for all
tleel or iron implements. The lard makes
the rosin soft, while the latter is a sure pre
ventative against rusting. The mixture is
good for ploughs, hoes, axes, indeed for all
tools and implements, as well as knives and
forks packed away.
To Scour Knives. A correspondent of
the Country Gentleman says: "A small,
dean, potatoe, with the end cut off, is a very
convenient medium of applying brick dust to
knives, keeping it about the right moisture,
while the juice of the potato assists in re
moving stains from the surface. We can get
a better polish by this method than by any
other we have tried, and with less labor."
Money Getting. Some people think
that it is necessary to be mean and miserly
in order to become wealthy. There never
was a greater mistake. Any man of com
mon intelligence may be prosperous if he
chooses to labor dilligently and faithfully in
a calling which he thoroughly understands.
Of course, prudence is indispensable to suc
cessprudence, mind, not niggardly mean
ness. The man who, commencing with lit
tle or nothing, has resolved to rise, must
also resolve to sacrifice nothing to appearance.
He cannot gain one true friend, nor ob
tain popularity that will really be useful to
him in his efforts to achieve independence,
by endeavoring to seem what he is not. The
orld is shrewder than pretensions suppose
it to be. It is a curious world looks sharp
ly into people's private affairs, and if an in
dividual makes a show beyond hi3 means,
ooo discovers and distr usts him. No one
who has a fortune to make or desires to re
ceive even a moderate competence, can af
ford to incur the world's distrust. There
