Winter. The weather has been cold
and stormy fr some days past. The ground
w btill covered with snow, but tha roads are
too rough for good sledding. A few inches
of additional snow would, however, put the
roads in excellent condition for hauling
lumber, etc.
A Revival. A revival meeting has been
iu progress in the Lutheran ch'irch in Al
toona, for some time llev. Henry Baker,
in charge. One hundred and ninety-one
Lave made a 'profession of faith in Christ,
und uinety-ono wjre admitted to member
ship, previous to last Sabbath, when fifty
more were to be admitted. The interest is
unabated.
Tiib-Wkkk ov Prayer, The "Week of
Prayer" was duly observed in this place, by
the members of the several churches. The
mrviMs were conducted by the Pastors of
the Metkodist, Presbyterian, Baptist, and
Lutheran congregations, and were well at
tended by.tha laity, and others. A spirit
of Christian fellowship and Christianjove,
pervaded the entire series of meetings!
uui, it is believed, much good will eventu
iite therefrom.

I'knn'a State Temperance Conven
tion. A Convention of the friends of Tem
perance, will be held in the Court House. in
Ilarrisburg. on Tuesday, February 18th,

find business. Each person attending the
Convention, who has purchased a full rate
ticket to Ilarrisburg at any station on either
of the Railroads, will, at the Convention. re
ceive a Free Return Tich t. All Churches,

The Timber Business. We have but
little definite information as to the quantity
of timber , being taken out, but the indica
tions are that it will fall something short of
that of lait year.. We do not say this for
the purpose of stimulating an increase of
quantity, but, on the contrary, to caution
oar pj iple against overstocking the mar
ket. Large quantities, of last year's timber,
still remain unsold, and, should the supply
equal that of last spring, and money remain
s scarce a3 it is now, a great loss will be ex
perienced by those who can least bear it.
Then, we repeat, be cautious as to how
much you get out. Better that the supply
hould be far les3 than the demand, for, in
that event, the prices will remain at a re
munmting standard. "A word to the
wise is sufficient."

the best authors in this country and Europe,

Temperanc Meeting. We were grati
fied, on Monday evening, to wc so large a
turnout to the Temperance Meeting. It in
dicates that the people are awaking to their
best interests, and showing by their pres
ence lit these gatherings that they are anx
ious to adopt some means by which the
monster-Intemperance may be driven fVoni
our land. We were also present at the chil
dretis' Temperance Meeting, on Sunday af
ternoon, where impressions were made on
the minds of the little one which, we hope,
may never be eri'aeed, but may lead them all
to grow up good temperance boys and
tills. At both thso meetings we were fa
vored with the services of Rev. George D.
Chenowith, Cor. Sue. of the Penn'a State
Temperance Union, who addressed us on
the subject of Temperance. We trust that
he may be as successful elsewhere, as he was
here, in inducing persons to sign the pledge ;
and, if he is, we can truly say. that through
his influence a rapid stride is being taken,
by the people of the State, toward crushing
out the terrible evil of intemperance. At
the two meetings '260 persons signed the
pledge.
