CLEARFIELD, PA., JAN. 8, 1868.
" THE MILE STONE.
Along a road two Irish lads
One summers day were walking,
And all the wbile with laugh and shout,
In lively strain were talking.
About the fair, about the girls,
And who were best at dancing ;
While at each pretty face they met,
Their eyes were brightly glancing.
And as they walked for many a mile,
They grew in time quite frisky ;
And now and then.froni lip to lip,
They passed the darling whiskey.
At length before them in the hedge,
The roadside view commanding,
They saw.its white side lettered o'er,
A mile stone lonely standing. "
They read.and quickly doffed their hats,
With sorrow in their faces ; '
They turned with reverential awe,
- And stepped back several paces.
' 'Speak low, we're near the dead, ' ' said one,
. "His grave we'll not be troublin;
An old man, 6urel 100, and
-His name is Miles from Dublin !"
Olosed for Eepairs.
Judge
ot Baltimore, is an
able
iudge and a pious man. He knows for what
tne isiana or o amaica is cnieny ceieurausu,
and thinks with Lord Byron, that "the two
things most consolatory to fallen man are
rum and true religion. "
, Disdaining to imbibe perpendicularly in
bar-room3, he keeps a demijohn of conceded
Otard in his office, and there slakes his
thirst as inclination brompts. The J udge
hasa son who knowshis father's babits.and
emulates them with filial assiduity. On a
Sunday morning the Judge would eay,
"Well, Kufus, going to the First Presby
terian with me this morning?"
"No, father, I reckon I'll go down to the
Second Methodist"
But on hU way to that edifice, Rufus u
niformly stopped at the office, unlocked the
old gentleman's private closet, and indulged
himself with pleasant fluid.
Every Sunday morning the Judge repeat
ed his laudable inquiry, but Kufus preferred
the becond Methodist, lhe Judge soon be
gan to notice a marked diminution in the
contents of the demijohn, and rightly sus
pected who was the culprit. The Judge
emptied the remaining liquid into another
vessel and placed it in a secluded place.
Next Sunday morning came the usual inter
rogatory: "Going with me this morning, Rufus?"
"No, father, I reckon I'll stick to the
Second Methodist."
On reaching the office and taking hold of
the demijohn, he not only saw with disgust
the empty jug, but noticed a small piece of
white paper attached to the handle, on
which was legibly inscribed these words :
"Second Methodist closed for repairs!"
After church father and son met, and
looking curiously at each other, smiled a lit
tle smile, but said nothing. The "repairs"
on that building have not yet been comple
ted. 0 Rufus says.
. An Explosion. "These are soup-per-fluous
hairs, ain't they?" drawled Joe M
, at the dinner table of his boarding
house, yesterday, meanwhile picking out a
couple ot the color ot those of the landlady's
fa!se curls, out of his plate of beef broth.
The "genteel" boarders were horrified. A
tremendous silence, awful from its intensity,
followed, and the landlady, speechless and
nearly bursting with indignation, left the
room and beckoned for Joe to follow her.
He went, like a lamb to the slaughter. Of
the awful objurgations he received, rumor
gives no particulars, but their tenor may be
inferred from a remark of Joe, after he had
ot his duds together, and was safely lan
ed out side the house, that he "would
swallow a whole 'waterfall' rather than to
get another such a tongue lashing."
A juror having applied to the judge to be
excused from serving on account of deafness,
the judge said, "Could you hear my charge
to the jury, sir?" "Yes, heard your hon
or's charge," said the juror, "but I couldn't
make any sense out of it." He was excused.
