The Harrisburg Telegraph vouches for
'be truth of the following: A boy aged
tjkht year, sou of Benjamin Whisler, re

b account of having a living snake in his

"v rapid growth it has attained a size
that renders it very painful to the boy.
liiirteen physicians assembled at the faul

. ... i i i
ot Alleppo townsntp; one mgnt last summer,
some notice of which inay be interesting to
your readers. Some time in the night ref
ered to, a terribly loud explosion was heard
by Mr. Griffith, Sr., living ou the road lead
ing from the place of elections for Alleppo
township, to Cameron. Mr. Griffith de
scribes the report as equaling in violence
that of the heaviest artillery, being suffi
cient to shake his house very sensibly. Soon
after this noise was heard, a laige stump
with an immense mass of stone and earth
attached, was found sitting on top of the
grass, in a field of Mr. Long, near by and in
full view of the public road. About thirty
yards below the stump there was a hole a
bout ten feet in diameter, corresponding in
shape with the mass which had been dis
placed. The hole was filled with water to
within two feet of the top. The stump had
been thrown up the hill this considerable
distance, together with a log about fifteen
feet long which was lying across the roots.
The stump and hole in the ground are still
to be seen by any one passing the road.
What was the nature ot the mighty force
that could have produced such an effect is
an interesting subject of inquiry."
An entirely new plan of reconstruction is
Eroposed by oue of those patriotic and amia
le gentlemen who represent the rebel ele
ment, in the Richmond press. Dissatisfied
with the law as it is, and apparently with
no confidence in any of the theories of re
construction, he thinks nothing would so
effectually promote that object as the hang
in; of about twenty Radicals. This is the
way people have talked before, when they
had hardly escaped the operation them
selves. But will the gentleman be satisfied
with about twenty hanging Radicals? If
so, the passion is more easily assuaged than
we supposed it-could be. Hang us up, then,
some twenty Radicals let them be men
w1k have done most to maintain the Union
and then our amiable rebel friends will
consent to be reconciled.
Many of the Southern cities have suffered
as much, or more, since the war, as during
it. Of Galveston especially "may this be
said. She has been visited by an almost
devastating pestilence. Out ot an estima
ted population of twenty-five thousand souls
over one thousand have been translated.
One out of every twenty-five, and from all
classes of society, for Yellow Jack is no res
pecter of persons. And to this grievous af
fiction has been added a flood second only in
destructiveness to the original deluge, and
following so close on the horrors of the war
that Galveston must be indeed a "scene of
desolation and woe.
It is represented that the liberated Rus

its justice and wisdom, and master and slave

A GREAT DISCOVERY. One of the
greatest and most useful discoveries in
medical science was made by the celebrated Dr.
J Dumas, of Paris. Chief Physician to the I nope
rial Infirmary of France, in 1861. Those who
have been afflicted with the painful disease known
as the Piles, and effectually cured by the use of
ur. lcmas' r RE5CB Pile bALVB, cannot speak too
highly of the benefits conferred upon tbem by
the use of this certain remedy. It has never
been known to fail in effecting a permanent cure
in a single case. In this rerpect it surpasses all
other medicines of the kind. It will do just
what it is recommended for ; if not. the money
will be refunded. One or two boxes is sufficient
to effect a permanent oure in four or six days, if
tne directions on tne box are followed. Price one
and two dollars per box, according to size. Sent
