WHAT MAKES A HAH.
A truthful soul, a loving nnnI,
Fall of affection for it kind ;
A spirit firm, erect, and free,
.1 That never basely bends the knee ;
That will uot bend a feather's weight.
" Of slavery's chain for small or great ;
That truly speaks from God within ;
That never makes a league with iu ;
.- That snaps the fetters despots aiake,
And loves the truth for its own sake ;
That worships God and llim alone, ;
And bows no more than at his throne ;
And trembles at no tyrant's nod ;
A soul that fears no one but God.
And thus can smile at curse or ban
This is the soul that makes the man.

An upper mill and lower mill : ,
Fell out about their water ;
To war they went that is, to law,
Resolved to give no quarter.
A lawyer was by each engaged,
And hotly they contended,
As fees grew slack, the war they waged,
They judged were better ended.
The heavy costs remaining still,
Were settled without bother ;
One lawyer took the upper mill,
(The lower mill the other.
Old Got. Stuyvesant, some years after
the British took possession of New York,
appeared before the Governor, (Carteret)
. with a complaint that he was annoyed by
men and boys bathing in front of his house
in a nude state. Governor Carteret assur
ed him it should be -stopped ; but happen
ing to recollect, said: "Why. Governor.
your house is at some distance from the
river, and how can it incommode the ladies
of your family ?" "Vy, you see," said old
Peter, shaking his cane, "mine galls have
got a pig spy glass."
A notorious toper used to mourn about
not having a regular pair of eyes one be

lucky for you," replied his friend; "for if
.your eyes had been matches, your nose
would have set them on fire years ago."
: The reason women never stammer is be
cause they talk so fast that a stammer has
no chance to get in. People stutter be
cause they hesitate. But who ever knew a
woman to hesitate about any thing.
A lady advertised for a "steady colored
man" tor a waiter. A drunken, red faced
fellow applied, affirming that he would just
suit her, as he had not changed color for
the last five years.
A lad who had oorrowed a dictionary to
read, returned it, after having got through,
with the remark, "It's werry nice reading,
but it somehow changed the subject werry
often."
Somebody who writes more truthfully
than poetically says : "An angel without
money is not thought so. much of now a
days as a devil with a bale of greenbacks. ' '
The young lady who has been telling how
. she felt the first time her lover kissed her, is
requested to state how she felt the first time
she was Bpanked.

A GREAT DISCOVERY. One of the
greatest and most useful discoveries in
medical science was made by the celebrated Dr.
J Dumas, of Paris. Chief Physician to the Impe
rial Infirmary of France, in 1861. Those who
have been afflicted with the painful disease known
as the Piles, and effectually cured by the use of
ur. uchas' bench File calve, cannot speak too
highly of the benefits conferred upon them by
the use of this certain remedy. It has never
been known to fail in effecting a permanent cure
in a single case. In this respect it surpasses all
other medicines of the kind. If will do just
what it is recommended for ; if not. the money
will be refunded. One or two boxes is sufficient
to effect a permanent cure in four or six days, if

QCHENCK'S SEAWEED TONIC.
This medicine, invented by Dr. J.H.Schenek,
of Philadelphia, is intended to dissolve the food
and make it into chyme, the first process of di
gestion. By cleansing the stomach with Schenck's
Mandrake Pills, the tonic soon restores the appe
tite, and food that could not be eaten before
using it will be easily digested.
Consumption cannot be cured by Schenck's
Pulmonic Syrup unless the stomach and liver is
made healthy ai.d the appetite restored, hence
the Tonic and Pills are required in nearly every
ease of consumption. A half doien bottles of
the Seaweed Tonic and three or four boxes of the
Mandrake Pil's will cure any ordinary case of
dyspepsia.
Dr. Schenck makes professional visits in New
York, Boston, and at his principal office in Phila
delphia every week. See daily papers of each
place, or his pamphlet on consumption for his
days of visitatioa
Please observe, when purchasing, that the two
likenesses of the Doctor, one when in the last
stage of consumption, and the other as he now is
in perfect health, are on the Government stamp '
Sold by all druggists and dealers, price $1 50
per bottle, or S7.50 the half doien. All letters
for advice should be addressed to Dr. Shencx't

CONVERSION OF 7 3-l0s.-In reply
w to numerous inquiries in regard to the
manner of converting the August 7 3-1 Os into the
new 5-20 Gold Coupon Bonds we mite the follow
ing statement for the benefit of the holders of
7 3-1 Os. who may not be informed. The Govern
ment computes the interest on both bonds in cur
rency from the date of the maturity of the last
coupon, allowing seven and three-tenths on the
7 3-1 Os, and charging six per cent on the 5-ZOs.
For example: You send to Washington $i ,000

(This counted at 365 d's pr a) 1.019 56
Allowed for 7 3-1 Os, 1,014 80
You pay Government : 4 76
It will be seen Ly this that the Gold interest is
given as currency, which is of its It a profit to
the party converting the 7 3-1 0s of nearly eight
dollars per 51.000, aside from the fact that at the
present rate of Gold, say 40, the 5-20s pay over 8
per cent per annum At present we are convert
ing the 7 3-1 0s on much better terms than the
Government, as the present buying and selling
rates enables us to allow the holder of the 7 d-IOs
a better figure than has yet been offered by any
one as a commission.
Parties exchanging through us, in addition to
getting much better terms than they ean from the
Government, will have their bonds delivered im
mediately, thus saving delay. We also register
any bonds sent to us without charge. On Bonds
sent oy express we pay charges both ways.
