CLEARFIELD, PA., JUNE 26, 1S67.
A IBAGMENT.
Broken the golden chord,
Severed the silken tie !
Never again will the old days como
Darling, to you and L
Dead the beautiful past
Scattered around its bier
Pale thoughts lie thick, and memories
Of days that were so dear.
Memories ! fold them up .
Lay them sacred by, .
What avails it to dream of the past?
The future for you and L
Broken the silken chord,
Severed the golden chain, -linking
us with the beautiful past.
That can never come again.
Irrefragible Proof. A Philadelphia
gentleman of festive, tastes who takes a
fair shake" at all the obtainable pleasures
of the town, last week assisted at a heavy
dinner, took much portable, and did not
leave for home until 'ever so many o'clock.'
On reaching his door and fishing up his
- night key, he became satisfied that he was
essentially convivialized, and not precisely
in" that condition which a good husband
should be to meet a good wife. Cautiously
entering the hall, he stopped,- 'JUtened a
moment, heard no noise,- and congratulated
himself that the family were fast asleep.
Quietly he took off overcoat, drew off boots,
turned off hall light, 6lowly ascended stairs
to family bed-room, hesitated at door, be-
lieved he was reasonably right, stealthily
entered, found gas turned low, wife appa
rently asleep ; thought she was asleep ; sat
down, listened again, no stir ; began to un
dress; got coat, pants, vest, drawers, stock
ings, all safely off; was journeying carefully
. toward couch, when wife of his bosom qui
etly asked; "Coming to bed, dear? "Yes,
love." "Well, dear, hadn't you letter take
off your hat?"
'.' Nasty describes as follows the affecting
ecene at the trial of Jeff. Davis:
Never shel I forgit the shout that assend
ed ea 1 1 orris wuz a sign in his name.
"Three cheers fur Jeffson Greeley and
Horn's Davis one and inseperable, now and
forever 1" shouted one enthoosiastic Con
fedrit. "Immortality is yoors !" sed another, see
zin him by the hand corjclly. "Jeffson Da
vis is the big dog uv the age, and yoo, my
deer sir, are now the tin kittle tide to his
tale. Wat joy ! Wat happinis ! Wen pos
terity speeks uv him, they'll speek uv yoo."
I cooJent restrane myself no more. Bus
tin into teers I fell onto Greeleys buzzam
nd we embraced. Ez he hedn't his epek
ticles on he sposed it wuz Davis hisself, and
he bustid into teers also, and there wuz wun
uv the most strikin tabloos ever exhibited.
I got away afore be diskivcred his mistake.
A bachelor being asked his opinion of
waterfalls, thought that filling in the region
of the brain would pay better than at the
back of the head.

pONVERSION OF 7 3-10s.-In reply
to numerous inquiries in regard to the
manner of converting the August 7 3-1 Os into the
new 5-20 Gold Coupon Bonds we mace the follow
ing statement for the bctiefit of the holders of
7 3-lOs. who may not be informed. The Govern
ment computes the interest on both bonds in cur
rency from the date of the maturity of the last
coupon, allowing seven and three-tenths on the
7 3-1 Us, and charging six per cent on the 6-20s.
For example: You send to Washington ?i ,0U0
7 3-10 Bond which reaches there on
.May 1st, : ; : $1,000

5-20s. :

(This counted at 355 d's pr a) 1.019 56
" Allowed for 7 3-10s, : 1,014 80
. Yoa pay Government : 4 78
" It will be seen by this that the Gold interest is
given as currency, which is of itselt a profit to
the party converting the 7 3-1 Os of nearly eight
dollars per "Ji.otio, aside irom the fact that at the
present rate of Gold, say 40, the 5-20s pay over 8
per cent per annum At present we are convert
ing the 7 3-108 on much, better terms than the
Government, as the present buying and selling
rates enables us to allowthe holder of the 7 3-1 0s
a better figure than has yet been offered by any
one as a commission. '
. Parties exchanging through us, in addition to
getting much better terms than they can from the
Government, will have their bonds delivered im
mediately, thus saving delay. We also register
any bonds sent to us without charge. On Bonds
sent by express we pay charges both ways.
