CLEARFIELD, PA., MAY 29, 1867.
Bead, Reflect, and Enah to the Eescue.
In seasons when our fund are low,
Subscribers are provoking alow,
And new fmpplies keep up the flow,
Of dimes, departing rapidly.
But we shall see a sadder tight.
When duns pour in from morn till night,
Commanding every sixpence bright
To be forked over speedily.
Our bonds and due-bills are arrayed
Each seal and signature displayed
The holders vow they must be paid,
With threats of "Law and Chancery."
Then to despair we're almost diiven;
There's precious little use in livin
When our last greenback's rudely riven
From hands thnt held it lovingly.
But larger yet these dues shall grow
When interest's added on below
Length'ning our chin a feet or so,
While gazing at them hopelessly.
'Tis so, that scarce have we begun
To plead for time upon a dun,
Before there comes one after one,
Demanding pay ferociously.
The prospect darkens. On ye brave I
Who would our very honor save !
Waive, Patrons, all your pretexts waive !
And pay the Printer cheerfully.
Ah ! it would yield us pleasure sweet,
A few delinquents now to meet,
Asking of us a clear receipt
For papers taken regularly.
Dropping the "H." A schoolmaster
was hearing one of hi pupils read, and the
boy, when he came to the word "honor,"
pronounced it full ; the master told him it
should be pronounced without the 11, as
thus. 'onor.
"Very well, sir," replied the lad, "I will
remember for the future."
"Ay," said the master, "always drop the
H."
. The next morning the master's tea. with
a hot muffin, had been brought to his desk ;
but the duties of his vocation made him
wait till it was cold, when, addressing the
same boy, he told him to take it to the fire
and heat it.
. "Yes, sir," replied the boy, and taking it
to the fire he ate it.
Presently the master called for his muffin.
"I have eaten it as you bade me," replied
the boy.
"Eat it ! you scoundrel ! I bade you take
it to the fire and heat it."
"But, sir," answered the lad, "yesterday
you told me always to drop the II."
An extra six feet of snow fell, the middle
of April, on the track of the pacific Rail
road, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in
California.
